fatally shoot
man at city park
Associated Press
PORTLAND — Police in
Portland fatally shot a man in
a city park Friday morning af-
ter responding to reports of a
person with a gun, authorities
said.
Police confronted the man at
Lents Park in the southeastern
part of the city and at least one
officer fired, killing the man,
The Oregonian.
The man who was killed has
not been identified.
A city spokesman said that
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler,
his chief of staff Bobby Lee,
public safety adviser Robert
King and Assistant Police Chief
Chris Davis were all heading to
the scene of the shooting.
Protesters also began ar-
riving at the scene within two
hours of the shooting and were
held behind a line of yellow po-
lice tape. Included in the group
was the mother of a Black man
who was fatally shot by police
in 2018.
Todd Littlefield, who lives
nearby, told the newspaper that
he went to the park after he
heard gunfire.
“I was just getting in my
truck, and I heard a loud shot,”
he said.
Littlefield drove to the park
and saw several officers stand-
ing behind trees and their cars,
Protesters also began

ordering a man to show his
hands, he said.
Juan Chavez, an attendant at
the nearby AM/PM gas station,
said he saw a man standing in
the middle of the intersection,
blocking traffic, with his shirt
off. He appeared to be unstable
and disoriented, Chavez told
the newspaper.
Police then showed up, and
then the man entered the park
before Chavez said he heard
two gunshots.
The area where the shooting
occurred is within the bound-
aries of operation for a new
pilot project called Portland
Street Response, which re-
sponds with a nonpolice team
to calls about homelessness or
people in mental health crisis,
Oregon Public Broadcasting
reported.

SALEM — A lawyer who
formed part of a “Wall of
Moms” confronting milita-
rized U.S. agents is suing fed-
eral authorities, claiming ex-
cessive force was used against
her and she was arrested with-
out probable cause.
In the lawsuit filed in fed-
eral court in Portland, Jenni-
fer Kristiansen also accused
an unnamed federal agent
of groping her breast and
buttocks as he trapped her
against a wall, leading her to
fear she would be raped.
Named as defendants are
Gabriel Russell, regional di-
rector of the Department of
Homeland Security’s Federal
Protective Service, super-
visors and 29 ground-level
agents who are not named be-
cause they wore no name tags.
Spokespersons for the DHS
did not immediately respond
to a request for comment on
the lawsuit, filed Monday.
The department has in the
past declined to comment
on pending court cases.
The lawsuit details how,
for one woman seeking to
protect Black Lives Matter
protesters from militarized
agents, one night turned into
a traumatic experience.
On July 20, Kristiansen
joined over 100 Wall of
Moms protesters and walked
to the federal courthouse
in downtown Portland. It
was the third night of Wall
of Moms protests, in which
women wearing yellow

Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse in Portland.
T-shirts and clothing stood in
line, arms locked, to support
Black Lives Matter protesters
who were facing off against
federal agents deployed by the
Trump administration.
John Hacker, an activist
who videotaped protests in
Portland, is also a plaintiff in
the lawsuit.
In the predawn hours of
July 29, after a protest had
largely dispersed, some 15
agents dressed in dark blue
or camouflage uniforms
jumped out of vehicles that
approached Hacker on the
street, the lawsuit says. They
are accused of taking him to
the courthouse and refusing
to answer his questions about
why he was being arrested.
