Continued from A5
“She had one summer of
pitching before we got our
hands on her,” Fischer said.
“I’m proud of her because it is
tough if you haven’t done it.”
It was not until this past
year, playing for Central Ore-
gon Crossfire — a travel soft-
ball team — when Johns began
pitching for the first time since
playing in Little League. She
had always been an accurate
hurler, but her velocity has im-
proved with the help of assis-
tant coach Shane Nakamura.
“He’s helped me get dialed
in,” Johns said. “Before, every-

one was trying to get my speed
up, because I had no speed on
me at all. He helped me get
my speed and my accuracy up.
That balance has helped me be
more confident.”
The Ravens picked up right
where they left off — in what
Fischer said felt like a decade
since they last played in 2019
— scoring multiple runs in all
four innings. Senior Kiani Na-
kamura finished the day with
a team-high three hits (two for
extra bases), three runs and
two RBIs in the victory.
It was a solid outing for a
team that had an entire season
canceled and minimal practice
time leading up to the start of
this season because of the pan-
demic.
“I’m proud of them; we
came out and did a lot of
things right,” Fischer said.
“It has been hard to get them
to click because of COVID. It
just took a little longer than
normal. But we are happy to
be back.”

Mack to play one more season for OSU women — Ellie
Mack has decided to return to the Oregon State women’s bas-
ketball team for one more season. Mack, a grad transfer from
Bucknell who started all 20 games this past season for the
Beavers, is taking advantage of the NCAA’s decision to allow
all students an extra year of eligibility due to the coronavirus
pandemic. Mack, a 6-foot-3 forward who can play a number of
positions, averaged 6.8 points per game, shooting 40.5% (45 for
111) from the floor. She was 22 for 60 from beyond the 3-point
line and pulled down 3.7 rebounds a game this past season.
Ducks fill assistant coaching vacancy — Dana Altman
has filled the vacancy on his staff with a fellow former assis-
tant to Lon Kruger. Chris Crutchfield, who served as head
coach at East Central (Ark.) this season after stints as an as-
sistant at Arkansas in 2019-20 and Oklahoma from 2011-19, is
joining Altman’s staff at Oregon as associate head coach. “We
are thrilled to be able to add a coach of Chris’ caliber to our
staff,” Altman said in a statement. Crutchfield led East Cen-
tral to a 10-9 record this season and recruited Buddy Hield
and Trae Young to OU, which went 160-105 and appeared in
six NCAA Tournaments during his eight seasons as an assis-
tant coach. “I’m excited and honored to be joining coach Alt-
man’s staff at the University of Oregon,” Crutchfield said in a
statement. Crutchfield replaces Tony Stubblefield, who left to
become the head coach at DePaul.

More importantly, they
helped provide the blocking for
an OSU running game that av-
eraged 5.4 yards per play, sec-
ond best in the Pac-12.
“We feel really good about
that group, and we’re building
depth there as well,” offensive
coordinator Brian Lindgren
said.
With its depth at tight end,
Lindgren said it affords OSU’s
offense incredible flexibility.
Lindgren particularly loves it
when he can put two tight ends
on the field, which in most
cases is Quitoriano and Mus-
grave.
“It puts some pressure on the
defensive coordinator,” Lind-
gren said.
Quitoriano is looking to
diversify his game this offsea-
son and spring. The former
Sprague of Salem High stand-
out was an immediate success
as a freshman blocking in the
run game. But to complete the
package, Quitoriano has to
threaten as a receiver. He has
slowly evolved. In his second
college season in 2019, Quit-
oriano caught five passes for
100 yards, two for touchdowns.

season, Quitoriano improved
to 14 catches for 185 yards.
“I think I’ve made big jumps,
every year. There’s always room
to improve,” Quitoriano said.
“I think I’ve gotten a lot better,
and I’m gonna try to only go
up from here.”
Lindgren said Quitoriano’s
pass catching ability is some-
what overshadowed because
of Musgrave’s downfield play-
making ability.
“I look for his catches to
grow, for sure,” Lindgren said.
“There’s some situations where
I feel kind of bad for him be-
cause Luke is such a talented
guy in the pass stuff. Some-
times, Teagan doesn’t always
get the opportunities.”
Such was the case during the
first padded 11-on-11 play pe-
riod of the spring. Musgrave
was one of the receiving high-
lights, as he made big plays,
particularly in third-down sit-
uations.
“That was really good to
see,” Lindgren said. “I think
continuing to get those guys
more involved in the pass
game is something we’re con-
tinuing to look at through the
spring.”
Coach Jonathan Smith said
last week it came to those who
caught his eye physically, Qui-
toriano topped the list. He’s
down nine pounds from his
roster weight of a year ago, but
Quitoriano’s speed and power
have increased.
“My main focus during
this offseason was my mobil-
ity and flexibility,” Quitoriano
said. “Trying to be the model
worker in the room, as much
as I can be.”
Briefly: Oregon State holds
its first spring scrimmage of
length Saturday. Lindgren
said they’ll spend time during
Thursday’s practice going over
plays and packages that have
already been installed, then try
to execute Saturday. Tempo
and eliminating pre-snap pen-
alties will be an emphasis. …
Lindgren said freshman quar-
terback Sam Vidlak has his
hands full learning the plays,
but impressed last Saturday
when “he put together a nice
drive, made some big-time
throws … it was good to see.”
… Second-year freshman re-
ceiver Zeriah Beason said a
year under his belt at OSU is
noticeable. “Last year I was just
sort of running around and the
game was pretty fast for me.
This year I feel like the game is
a lot slower,” said Beason, who
caught 16 passes for 148 yards
and three touchdowns in 2020.
