Redmond
Continued from A11
The construction materials
company approached Red-
mond with the hopes of build-
ing a distribution facility there,
Stark told the council.
After company leaders real-
ized a 14-acre plot was avail-
able, they decided to build an
even larger campus — one half
distribution, one half produc-
tion.
The city and the company
agreed to a $2,805,264 sale
price, and the city will pocket
$2.67 million of that after de-
ducting about $135,000 in bro-
ker fees and closing costs, ac-
cording to city documents.
Stark told The Bulletin
that the construction materi-
als company first has to jump
through some permitting
hoops, but company leaders
hope to break ground on the
distribution site by the end of
2021. Construction could be
finished as early as late 2022,
Stark said.
Stark is excited that another
company is bringing more liv-
ing-wage jobs in Redmond,
not long after Wild Mike’s Ulti-
mate Pizza announced moving
its headquarters to the city.
“Any time you bring even
one job, that’s a big deal, but
this company’s looking at 35
to 60 jobs,” Stark told The Bul-
letin.
Mayor George Endicott
shared Stark’s optimism for
Redmond’s economic future
with this sale.
“We continue to grow, in
spite of things like COVID,” he
told The Bulletin Wednesday.
“People still want to come here.
Our building industry contin-
ues to thrive.”

Tomato
Continued from A11
The Midnight Roma is also resistant to verti-
cillium wilt, a plant disease.
Although OSU announced the new variety
this week, Myers said it was officially released in
the fall, and Row 7 Seed Co. in Tarrytown, New
York, has exclusive rights to sell seeds online.
The new tomato is already gaining traction.
Serious Pie, a Seattle pizza restaurant, is using
Midnight Roma to make gourmet pizza sauce,
and when Row 7 Seed Co.’s co-founder Dan Bar-
ber introduced the tomato on Instagram, his
post received more than 22,000 likes.
Myers said the first purple tomato he released
a decade ago, the Indigo Rose, has already been
licensed, or is in the process of being licensed,
across much of Canada, Europe, Japan and
South Africa.
Myers said he believes consumer interest is
growing in specialty and heirloom tomato va-
rieties. “I see that trend reflected in the grocery
stores,” he said.
The Indigo Rose and Midnight Roma incor-
porate genes from wild tomato varieties.
Tomatoes’ wild relatives can be found in
South America, where they were domesticated
thousands of years ago. Many heirloom varieties
Coinbase
Continued from A11
Founded in 2012, Coinbase
became popular among cryp-
tocurrency fans by providing
them with an easier way to ex-
change shares of Bitcoin and
other digital currencies. Unlike
many newly public companies,
Coinbase is profitable — the
company estimates it had net
income of between $730 mil-
lion and $800 million in the
first quarter.

This image shows the new purple tomato, Midnight
Roma, developed by an Oregon State University
vegetable breeder.
were developed in Central America and Mexico.
Today, Myers said, the tomato is America’s most
popular produce — second only to the potato
— and he estimates there are now about 10,000
varieties.
Myers said growers planting the Midnight
Roma should know what to look for in ripeness.
A ripe Midnight Roma, he said, will get softer,
subtly move from a black, shiny appearance to
a dull, brownish purple and will have a shaded
reddish tip.
Dan Ives, analyst at Wed-
bush Securities, said in a note
Wednesday that “Coinbase
is a foundational piece of the
crypto ecosystem and is a ba-
rometer for the growing main-
stream adoption of Bitcoin and
crypto for the coming years.”
Until recently, the major fi-
nancial institutions avoided
cryptocurrencies, and Bitcoin
is still viewed more as a store
of value than as a method of
payment.
Even as Coinbase made its
trading debut, Federal Reserve
Chair Jerome Powell described
cryptocurrencies as “vehi-
cles for speculation” in com-
ments to the Economic Club of
Washington. “No one is using
them for payments, for exam-
ple, like the dollar.”
David Trainer, CEO of in-
vestment research firm New
Constructs, said Coinbase has
“little-to-no-chance of meeting
the future profit expectations
that are baked into its ridicu-
lously high valuation.”
