Oregon’s Duarte wins Jerry West Shooting Guard of
the Year award — Chris Duarte played a lot like “The Logo”
during his final season at Oregon. Fittingly, Duarte was named
Saturday as the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year by the
Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is the first
Pac-12 player to receive the award. Duarte was a third-team
All-American during the 2020-21 season and one of just two
players nationally who averaged at least 17.0 points and 1.9
steals per game while shooting 50% from the field. “It is an
honor to win this award,” Duarte said in a statement. “It’s an
amazing feeling. This was one of the goals that I worked for this
year and it feels good to have that hard work pay off.” West’s
likeness has been used as the NBA logo since 1969. Duarte, who
had 13 assists during Oregon’s two NCAA Tournament games,
is projected as a late first-round pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Oregon State, Tinkle agree on contract through 2026-
27 season — Wayne Tinkle was rewarded Monday follow-
ing a breakout men’s basketball season when the Oregon State
coach and school agreed on a three-year contract extension.
Tinkle, 55, now has a six-year contract at Oregon State, a deal
that expires following the end of the 2026-27 season. Tinkle
had two years remaining on a contract he signed in 2019, plus
a contractually-obligated additional year after the Beavers
qualified for this year’s NCAA Tournament. Financial de-
tails of the contract are not immediately known, although it
is expected the buyout was increased. Tinkle currently has a
$750,000 buyout if he leaves for another job during the next
12 months. Tinkle, hired prior to the 2014-15 season after an
eight-year run at Montana, is slated to make $2.2 million in
2021-22, and $2.3 million in 2022-23.
EQUESTRIAN
Eastern Oregon instructor wins national horseman-
ship competition — An instructor at Treasure Valley Com-
munity College recently clinched top honors at a prestigious
horsemanship competition in Fort Worth, Texas. Wade Black,
who directs the college’s Equine Science program and teaches
horse production and horsemanship, claimed the colt-start-
ing championships at the Road to the Horse competition late
last month. The win included a $75,000 payout for the col-
lege teacher. Black won the wild card division of the Road to
the Horse in 2019 to earn a slot at the 2021 Road to the Horse
event. The Road to the Horse is a three-day colt-starting com-
petition that began in 2003. Contestants have three days to
start untrained 3-year-old geldings and vie for victory by ne-
gotiating a series of tasks — including an obstacle course —
over three days. “This prestigious win showcases the world-
class caliber of equine instruction and training we offer at
TVCC,” said Dana Young, TVCC president.

Fly-tying corner
Jesse Riding is the originator of J’s Purple Nurple, a fantastic attrac-
tor tied after the manner of a classic parachute mayfly. A dry fly remi-
niscent of many a purple nurple (if you don’t know what that is, count
yourself lucky), it is designed with a two-tone attractor body with a hi-
viz foam indicator, tied on a No. 12-16 dry fly hook.
If you could choose just one small attractor pattern, this would be
the one to pick. Tie it or buy it to imitate all species of mayflies from
blue-winged olives to pale morning duns, mahoganies and March
browns.
For the tail, use grizzly hackle. For the tag, use fluorescent red (pink)
Danville Flymaster. Build the body with purple Uni Thread and rib
with the fluorescent red. Tie in a white foam indicator post and then
apply a thin coat of polish to the top of the body and allow to dry. Ap-
ply pink paint to the top of the foam post. Finish with natural grizzly
tied parachute-style.

Baylor
Continued from A5
Guard Davion Mitchell —
nicknamed “Off Night” be-
cause so many opponents
encounter one when they go
against him — finished with
15 points and did his best on
Suggs. The freshman finished
with 22 points — most of them
after the Zags were well into
desperation mode — and likely
will be heading to the NBA lot-
tery next.
Gonzaga’s first loss in 32
games this season — 36 dating
to 2019-20 — leaves Indiana’s
1975-76 team as the last to go
undefeated. If Bob May, Quinn
Buckner and the rest of coach
Bob Knight’s team were keep-
ing champagne cold to cele-
brate — a la the perfect ’72 Mi-
ami Dolphins — they could’ve
uncorked it by halftime.
Or sooner.
Baylor was up 9-0 after 2
1/2 minutes and the Bulldogs
faced only their fourth dou-
ble-digit deficit of the season
at 11-1. They faced their big-
A new angler should learn
to cast, watch a few videos and
get on the water. For the angler
looking to catch a first trout on
a fly, it is hard to beat our trout
lakes. Let’s make this easy.
Buy, beg or borrow a boat
— a float tube, car-topper or
canoe. Tie on a 9-foot tapered
leader to a floating or slow-sink
line, cast out (or pull out) 40 to
60 feet of line and start trolling.
Best trout flies for still-wa-
ter trout in the spring? Ask 100
people and get 50 different an-
swers, but leech patterns head
the list. The Mack’s Smile Blade
Fly is a great trolling option
from Diamond Lake to East
Lake and Little Lava because
of the mylar blade that throws
flash and gives the fly great ac-
tion. It comes in different color
combinations, but I would put
the top three as gold sparkle,
copper scale and flame mirror.
Other good leech patterns
for casting and trolling include
blood red, black and olive
tungsten or beadhead Mohair
Buggers. Leeches should be
weighted at the head so that
they sink or wobble when the
fly isn’t moving. Other favorites
include the Rufus patterns and
Foisset’s TWS.
With the rod strung, a fly on
gest deficit of the season — 15
points — with 7:10 gone. By
then, Suggs had two fouls and
was watching from the bench.
Gonzaga was practically just
standing there for it all.
This was one of the
most-anticipated finals in
recent history, a meeting of
the two best teams from the
last two seasons — this one
and 2020, when COVID-19
scrapped the action before
tournament time. They were
scheduled to meet this sea-
son in Indy, on Dec. 5, but a
the leader, and a rising barom-
eter, where are the fish biting?
In April, a couple of the best
Central Oregon destinations
are Pine Hollow Reservoir and
Rock Creek Reservoir, near
Wamic and Tygh Valley. Both
lakes will be planted with good
numbers of legals and larger
brood stock, which can weigh 6
to 8 pounds. Detroit Reservoir
will also get regular plants of
hatchery fish starting in April.
By mid-to-late April, as the
waters warm, Laurance Lake
(near Mt. Hood) and both
South Twin and North Twin
will be good bets.
In May, Ochoco Reservoir,
Antelope Flat and Walton Lake
will come into play. The shal-
lows warm first, which pro-
motes weed growth and bug
life. Trout will be in the shal-
lows, along weed beds and near
the drop-offs. Up on Mount
Hood, Clear Lake is a good fair-
weather choice, whenever the
wind isn’t blowing too hard.
With warmer days and early
trout stocking, there are a lot of
fish to catch and one of them
could be your very first trout
on a fly.

COVID-19 outbreak on the
Gonzaga team ended those
plans.
But the game didn’t live up
to the hype, and it was out of
hand early.
Baylor had nine offensive re-
bounds in the first half that led
to nine second-chance points,
and wore down the Zags on
defense. Gonzaga shot 54%
from the floor over the first
20 minutes but Baylor had 16
more attempts — the kind of
math that doesn’t add up for a
team playing in the title game.
