— After failing to make the cut last week in her first tourna-
ment back from a 21-month break and the birth of her daugh-
ter, Makenna, Wie West made four birdies in a 2-under 70 at
the ANA Inspiration LPGA major in Rancho Mirage, Califor-
nia, on Thursday. She finished the day tied for 16th, four shots
behind first-round leader Patty Tavatanakit, of Thailand, who
has a one-stroke lead after a bogey-free 6-under 66. … On
the PGA Tour, Camilo Villegas chipped in twice to highlight
a nine-birdie round that earned him an 8-under 64 and the
first-round lead at the Texas Open on Thursday. Sung Kang is
two shots back with Cameron Tringale after each had a 66 at
TPC San Antonio’s Oaks Course. Jordan Spieth, whose strug-
gles the past three years appear to be subsiding after four top-
10 finishes the past two months, is three back (67) with Seung-
Yul Noh and Hideki Matsuyama. Phil Mickelson dropped to
15 shots back when he had a 10 on the 18th hole — he took
two penalty shots and another three strokes trying to get away
from a greenside stream — and ended with a 79.

Continued from B3
For much of the first half,
the Lava Bears had the more
aggressive attack but had
some bad luck. Three of their
shots ricocheted off the goal-
posts, which kept them from
taking the lead.
“I told them (at halftime)
you just have to keep going for
it and keep battling and keep
going for those opportunities
because the goals will come,”
said Meyers. “And they did.”
After halftime, the roles re-
versed. The Lava Bears scored
early when Jolley netted her
second goal of the game to
give Bend its first lead, 2-1.
However, Summit then had
the more dangerous attacks.
A handball in the goal-
keeper’s box gave the Storm
the penalty kick late in the
second half for Beaulieu to
score the game-tying goal.
While both teams had their
chances to score the match’s
winning goal, neither side was
able to convert before the fi-
nal whistle.
For Summit (7-1-1), it was
the final match of the sea-
son, while Bend High (5-1-1)
will have two more matches
next week on the road against
South Eugene and North Eu-
gene.

The crowd varied at each

Yankee Stadium, limited to 20%
of capacity. Fans had to show
proof of complete vaccination
at least two weeks earlier or a
recent negative virus test, and
masks were required.
In the Bronx, the Bleacher
Creatures did their Roll Call in
the right-field seats and the PA
announcer called out “welcome
back to Yankee Stadium!”
The whole scene caught Blue
Jays rookie reliever Julian Mer-
ryweather a bit off-guard.
“It was definitely weird,” Mer-
ryweather said after earning a
save in a 3-2, 10-inning win. “I
asked a few people: What are all
these people doing here? Who
are these people? But it was
great to have fans again.”
Milwaukee outfielder Lo-
renzo Cain was back, too. After
opting out of playing last year

seen so far.
“This whole season, it’s defi-

of a return to normalcy than
what we had all of last year,” he
said.
