Oregon moves up in coaches poll after sweeping Utah
Continued from A5
— Oregon softball moved up in the coaches poll and down in
the USA Softball poll after sweeping Utah to open Pac-12 play.
The Ducks (20-1, 3-0 Pac-12) are No. 3 with 710 points in the
NFCA coaches poll and No. 4 with 418 points in the USA Soft-
ball poll after sweeping the Utes in four games last weekend.
That’s up from No. 4 with 691 points and down from 431 points
at No. 4, respectively, last week. Oregon hosts a three-game se-
ries with Loyola Marymount starting Friday at 1 p.m.
“He would always say, think
‘yes, yes, yes, yes and trust your
eyes to tell you no,’” White said.
To do that, White is talking
to himself, sometimes audibly
repeating those words at the
plate, even as the pitcher is de-
livering the ball.
“I’m not sure if you are or
anyone else has seen it, but if
you pay attention, I’m literally
trying to tell myself, ‘yes, yes,
yes,’ when I’m in the box,” he
said. “I did it for the first time
against the Royals. I looked at
the video from the side view
and you can see my mouth
moving on the pitch. That’s a
good thing.”
That “yes” moment for
White against the Royals was
a two-run single to right field
with the bases loaded. He went
2 for 3 in the game with a walk.
The next day against the An-
gels, he crushed a grand slam to
left-center. And while he went
0 for 3 against the White Sox,
he had productive at-bats with
a sacrifice fly and a line out to
center that had a 111-mph exit
velocity.
White is making aggressive
swings when he sees pitches he
wants to hit.
“I feel like I really got away
from that last year,” he said. “I
got so caught up in trying to
read what the pitchers were do-
ing and I felt like I was on the
defense. And that’s never good
when you’re at the plate. So I’m
really just going to focus on be-
ing on the attack and stay with

Problem gambling foes warn on sports betting col-
lege deals — A national group that fights compulsive gam-
bling is concerned about financial deals between colleges and
sports betting companies. The National Council on Problem
Gambling on Tuesday issued a set of recommendations for
such deals that aim to reduce the danger of students develop-
ing a gambling problem. They include not compensating the
schools based on the number of people the colleges refer to
sign up for sports betting.

Texans QB Watson facing 14 lawsuits alleging sex as-
sault — A 14th woman has filed a lawsuit accusing Hous-
ton Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson of sexual assault
and harassment. The claims in the latest suit, which was filed
late Monday night, are similar to those in the earlier cases in
which the women accuse Watson of exposing himself, touch-
ing them with his penis or kissing them against their will
while he got a massage. Watson’s attorney, Rusty Hardin, has
called the allegations “meritless,” while the NFL player has
broadly denied he acted inappropriately. The NFL has said it’s
investigating the allegations against Watson.

I get in there, it’s go-time, it’s

And really for White, it’s not
about where his hands start,
but that they are in the proper
position when he gets his front
foot down on the ground as the
swing moves forward.
“You can start them how-
ever,” he said. “Look at Craig
Counsell or Kevin Youkilis, you
can start in different, funky po-
sitions. But as long as you get to
a good firing position (to start
the swing), you’ve got a shot.”
Hitting coach Tim Laker is
fine with this approach.
“He’s really trying to focus
on hitting the fastball,” Laker
said. “Last year, there were
times where he got in between
because he’d really want to hit
the fastball, but he’d be too
concerned about chasing the
breaking ball. He’s really trying
to commit to being aggressive
to hitting the fastball. And if
they throw a lousy breaking
ball that hangs up, he can adjust
and hit it.”
