In the last race before the World Cup Finals, Liensberger overtook first-run leader Mi- kaela Shiffrin with a free-flow- ing final run, beating the American by 0.72 seconds. “I felt like flying, it was a flight from top to bottom,” Liensberger said. “I just gave it all. That’s really amazing. If there’s something you love and you put all your energy in it, you can really achieve it.” Shiffrin, who turned 26 on Saturday, was chasing her 70th career win. She led Liensberger by 0.19 after the opening run, but had lost her advantage by the second split of her final run. “I knew Liensberger would be pushing very hard,” Shiffrin said. “I tried to push and kind of keep up with the pace, so I can take some good things from it.” Discipline leader Petra Vl- hova, who won Friday’s floodlit slalom on the same course, fin- ished only in eighth following a big mistake in the Slovakian’s opening run. The Swiss skier had a blis- tering final run as he improved from fourth position to win the race by more than a second. Odermatt overtook his main rival in the GS standings, Alexis Pinturault, and built a lead of 25 points. A race win is worth 100 points. The Frenchman finished Saturday’s race in fourth. One more GS is scheduled — at the season-ending finals in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, next week. “I really don’t know how I managed to do this today. I was tired,” Odermatt said. “My emotions are somewhere, I don’t know where. I am really happy about my skiing today.” Pinturault and Odermatt are ranked 1-2 in the overall stand- ings, with the Frenchman’s lead now reduced to just 31 points. However, Pinturault was ex- pected to gain points again in Sunday’s slalom, an event which Odermatt will be sitting out. Odermatt also has a shot at the super-G title next week in the Swiss skier’s breakout sea- son on the World Cup. A four-time gold medalist at the 2018 junior world cham- pionships, Odermatt won his first World Cup race last sea- son, before adding three more wins in the current campaign. In December, he ended a 10- year Swiss victory drought in men’s giant slaloms. On Saturday, Odermatt led a Swiss 1-2 finish, 1.06 seconds ahead of Loïc Meillard, who was fastest in the opening run but posted only the 26th-fastest time in the final run. It was Meillard’s seventh ca- reer podium, including one win from a parallel GS a year ago. Stefan Brennsteiner of Austria was 1.09 behind in third, two Yesterday City Hi/Lo/Prec. CENTRAL: Sunshine early, then increasing clouds on Sunday. Cloudy with a bit of rain Sunday night. SATURDAY fight for the season-long sla- lom title, as Vlhova had her lead over Liensberger reduced to 22 points, with Shiffrin 37 behind in third. The last race is next Saturday in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. “The only thing you can re- ally expect is that it will be an exciting show,” said Shiffrin, who finished third in Friday’s slalom after she just avoided skiing out following a mistake. “Kathi and Petra are both very strong,” the American said. “I am not totally out of the fight, which is, after yester- day, a little bit of a surprise.” Vlhova won the title last sea- son, dethroning six-time winner Shiffrin as the American was taking a break from racing fol- lowing the death of her father. On Saturday, Vlhova fin- ished the first run 2.95 seconds behind in 27th place, with only the top 30 being allowed to start in the second run. Liensberger’s win marked the first victory for Austria in any women’s World Cup race this season. The team never had a full season without a vic- tory in the World Cup, which started in 1967. Swiss skier Wendy Holdener finished Saturday’s race 1.65 behind in third, and Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan fin- ished fifth for her career-best result in slalom.
