SPORTS BRIEFING
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Beavers win 3rd straight on the road over Utah —
Oregon State won its third consecutive conference road game
for the first time since 2003, beating Utah 75-70 Wednesday
night in Salt Lake City. Gianni Hunt tied a career high with
17 points and the Beavers shot 52.7% (29 of 55) to sweep the
season series from Utah. OSU also shot 10 of 22 from 3-point
range. Oregon State (14-11, 10-9 Pac-12) pulled into a three-
way tie for fifth place with Stanford and Arizona in the Pac-
12. The outcome clinched a winning season for the Beavers.
Oregon State finishes its regular season Sunday with a 5 p.m.
game against Oregon in Corvallis.
Oregon now atop Pac-12 with win over UCLA — After
trailing UCLA by two points at halftime, Oregon (18-5, 13-4
Pac-12) came out firing in the second half, making nearly 70%
of its field goals (16 of 23) en route to a key 82-74 home victory
that vaults the Ducks into first place over the Bruins (17-7, 13-
5). Chris Duarte led Oregon with 23 points and also had four
rebounds, while L.J. Figueroa had 18.

Kikuchi
Continued from A5
Part of the issue with ana-
lyzing Kikuchi is the oddity of
the past two seasons. In 2019,
Kikuchi was spending his first
year away from Japan, making
the adjustment to the majors.
At times, he looked the part
of an ace. At other times, he
struggled badly and appeared
stubborn about making adjust-
ments.
He made just nine starts
during the shortened 2020 sea-
son, but the results led to opti-
mism about Kikuchi moving
forward, even with numbers
— 2-4, 5.17 ERA — that over-
all didn’t look great. He pitched
at least six innings in four of
his starts. In two starts against
division rival Oakland, Kiku-
chi allowed no earned runs in
12 innings. He added a cutter
to go along with his excellent
slider.
And he seemed to find com-
fort with Seattle’s six-man rota-
tion, which almost duplicated
the frequency with which he

Meanwhile, Oregon (13-7) is
sputtering amid three losses in
its last four games and could be
without point guard Te-Hina
Paopao this week due to an un-
specified foot injury.
“Now it’s our turn to im-
prove,” Oregon coach Kelly
Graves said. “We need to step
up and play better. It’s a new
season and we’ve struggled.
We’ve had our struggles, espe-
cially down the stretch here.
We got to find a way to right
the ship a little bit.
“I’m still confident; I’m for-
ever optimist. I really feel like
we can but at some point we’ve
got to actually do it. Right now
we’re guaranteed two games:
One in Vegas and one in San
Antonio and we’ll see if we de-

from 2019. He kind of spent
last year figuring out what that
stuff is and how to use it and
how to play with it,” pitching
coach Pete Woodworth said.
“I think we saw in the second
half the confidence in knowing
that this stuff is real, and I can
wreak havoc on a handful of
lineups, it doesn’t really matter
who’s in the box.”
Servais said Kikuchi has
taken a very analytical ap-
proach to understanding the
value of being ahead in the
count and what pitches work
best in those situations. Having
altered his repertoire of pitches
last year, Kikuchi said his off-
season was focused on pitch
command and simplifying his
mechanics.
“Scott has trusted me for two
years now and so I want to be
able to put up good numbers
for him this year and years to
come,” Kikuchi said.
“Now it’s our turn to improve. We need to step up and play
better. It’s a new season and we’ve struggled. We’ve had our
struggles, especially down the stretch here. We got to find a

deserve to play more in both.”
which is coming off allowing a
season-high 88 points and has
fallen from 23rd nationally to
69th in the last five games.
“I for some reason believe
that … it’s going to click and
we’re going to play better bas-
ketball when it counts here,”
Graves said.
“We’re in the (NCAA Tour-
nament) field — I’m not wor-
ried about that; but we want to
get in the field with a little bit
of momentum. I think people
forget a few years ago when we
made our first run here we lost
the two games at home going
into that (Pac-12) tournament
and then got a nice win against
Washington up there in the
second round and then took
off from there.
“I’m hoping that we still have
that kind of a magical run left
in us.”

A second straight conference
tournament title and third in
the last four years is still pos-
sible for Oregon, but with the
way the last three weeks have
gone it would be getting way
ahead of itself to start dream-
ing of cutting down nets.
The Ducks shot well from
three in Sunday’s loss to OSU,
though Taylor Mikesell took
half of Oregon’s 12 attempts,
its second-fewest of the season.
Sedona Prince also scored a ca-
reer-high 22 points to go with
five rebounds.
Those are the things UO has
to look to build off of, while
also improving its defense,
