SPORTS BRIEFING U.S. Olympic coach accused of abusing athletes com- mits suicide — A former U.S. Olympics gymnastics coach with ties to disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar killed himself Thursday, hours after being charged with turning his Michi- gan gym into a hub of human trafficking by coercing girls to train and then abusing them, authorities said. John Geddert was supposed to appear in an Eaton County court, near Lan- sing. His body was found at a rest area along Interstate 96, according to state police. No other details were immediately released. Nessel earlier announced that Geddert was charged with two dozen crimes, including sexual assault, human traf- ficking and running a criminal enterprise. The charges were the latest fallout from the sexual abuse scandal involving Nas- sar, a former Michigan State University sports doctor now in prison. Geddert, 63, was head coach of the 2012 U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team. The bulk of the case against him involved his gym in Dimondale and how he treated the young athletes whose families paid to have them train under him. — Bulletin wire report BASKETBALL NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE W L Pct Phila. 22 11 .667 Brooklyn 22 12 .647 Milwaukee 19 13 .594 indiana 15 15 .500 Toronto 16 17 .485 new york 16 17 .485 Chicago 15 16 .484 Charlotte 15 16 .484 Boston 15 17 .469 Miami 15 17 .469 atlanta 14 18 .438 Washington 12 18 .400 Orlando 13 20 .394 Cleveland 12 21 .364 detroit 9 23 .281 WESTERN CONFERENCE W L Pct utah 26 6 .813 l.a. Cap space can be manipulated. But trying to cut that deficit plus then taking on a contract such as Wilson’s seems a hard ask. The Saints also don’t really have a QB to give back to Se- attle unless you’re a big fan of Taysom Hill, who believe it or not will actually be 31 when next season begins. Continued from B3 Dallas Cowboys The Cowboys make some sense in that they also have a somewhat-disgruntled quar- terback in Dak Prescott who Seattle could get in return to replace Wilson (and he is ex- pected to be ready for training camp in July despite suffering a broken ankle last season). The issue is Prescott’s con- tract. He is due to be an unre- stricted free agent March 17, though that won’t happen — either he’ll get a contract before then or Dallas will slap him with a franchise tag. But with the tag at $37.169 million, ei- ther one would mean a big cap hit in 2021. A team trading for Prescott could maybe do something to ease the cap hit some, but in the hypothetical case of the Seahawks, taking on whatever his cap number and taking the dead money on Wil- son’s would just about write off the 2021 season, unless some- how this was a deal worked out after June 1. But delaying any deal until June 1 also means not includ- ing any 2021 draft picks, again DEALS Transactions LPGA Tour NHL Glance NHL W L OT 11 4 2 10 5 4 10 6 3 9 4 3 10 7 1 7 6 2 6 8 3 6 8 3 W L OT 13 4 2 13 4 1 11 6 4 12 6 1 8 8 5 6 5 4 8 11 0 6 13 3 W L OT 11 4 1 10 8 2 9 6 3 9 7 3 10 6 0 9 6 1 7 8 2 6 10 4 W L OT 15 4 2 13 8 0 12 6 1 9 6 4 9 10 2 8 13 2 7 14 1 NOTE: Two points for a win, one point for overtime loss. Stephen Brashear/AP file Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson looks to pass before scrambling during a game against the Minnesota Vikings in October in Seattle. making this a deal that might not do a lot of good for the up- coming season. Chicago Bears Here was the surprise en- trant in the possible Wilson sweepstakes. The Bears could sure use a quarterback. But that also means they don’t have a good one to deal in return with only Nick Foles — who has a $10.4 million dead cap hit — under contract . The Bears, though, do at least have each of their next three first-round picks — re- call that a report from Michael Silver of the NFL Network last week stated Seattle would need at least three first-round picks to even begin to have a discus- sion on a trade. But the Bears don’t pick un- til No. 20 this year, by which time any of the supposed “sure thing’’ rookie QBs of this year will be long gone. New Orleans Saints It’s easy to see why Wilson might want to go to the Saints as they have a roster that has been among the most talented in the NFL the last few years with a likely opening at QB with Drew Brees expected to retire. The Saints, though, are in “I think it’s going to be a tough challenge for me here because the course allows you to play it a lot of different ways.” — Phil Mickelson, on the PGA Tour Champions’ Cologuard Classic as an amateur — he cut him- self in the process — and did it twice more after consecutive wins in 1995-96. “It looks cool. I’ve got three of them that are wanting a Las Vegas Raiders Of any of the teams on this list, the Raiders might make the most sense from Seattle’s standpoint, at least. Seattle could get back Derek Carr, whose cap situation is not bad at all — only $2.5 mil- lion in dead money for 2021 and with no guaranteed salary either this year or next on his contract. Seattle could easily rework a deal for Carr to bring down his cap numbers of $22.1 and $19.8 the next two years. The Raiders also have all their upcoming first-round picks, including No. 17 in 2021. If you’re into gambling on where Wilson could end up someday, Sin City might be your best bet, but the smartest money remains that Wilson isn’t going anywhere this year. fourth, they want a nice even number,” he said. “They want a foursome. They don’t like to go out as three, they’re always looking for a fourth, so that would be a nice fit.” So would doing something no other golfer has done.
