ICE-T
ICE-T
35
BY JAY BOBBIN
Tracy Lauren Marrow – alias
Ice-T – was born on Feb. 16,
1958, in Newark, N.J. Or-
phaned at a young age, he was
sent to live with relatives; that
took him to Los Angeles, where
a cousin’s love for contemporary
music inspired what became
Marrow’s career path.
Exposed to a gang culture in
high school, but resisting joining
it, Marrow got his famous nick-
name from responses from fellow
students when he would recite
lines from novels by Iceberg
Slim. Ice-T’s music career started
with his performing with a school
group called The Precious Few.
Enlisting in the U.S. Army, he
eventually went AWOL, but the
Sugarhill Gang’s song “Rapper’s
Delight” prompted him to take
up rapping during his period of
service.
Having the means to purchase
some stereo equipment, Ice-T edu-
cated himself to be able to use it
professionally and become a disc
jockey at parties. Though he also
flirted with criminal activity, he left
that behind after being hospital-
ized for a car accident, then won
an open-mic competition judged
by rapper Kurtis Blow.

“Cold Wind Madness,” “Body
Rock” and “6 in the Mornin”’
were among the singles that
established Ice-T and led to his
deal with Sire Records, where
he started to build a catalog of
albums that led to the landmark
release “O.G. Original Gang-
ster.” He used it to launch his
heavy-metal band Body Count.
Moving to the Priority Records
label, Ice-T had considerable
success with the album “Home In-
vasion,” and he also began grav-
itating more toward the acting
career that had brought him into
contact with producer Dick Wolf
on the television series “New
York Undercover” and “Players.”
That association led him into the
role of police detective Odafin
“Fin” Tutuola on NBC’s “Law &
Order: Special Victims Unit,”
which he has been with for al-
most its entire run (joining it in its
second season).
Featured on the reality shows
“Ice-T’s Rap School” and “Ice
Loves Coco,” Ice-T has been
married to model Nicole “Coco
Mane” Austin since 2002. They
have a daughter together, and
Ice-T also has a son and a daugh-
ter from earlier relationships.
