Ed Marinaro and Betty

Steven Bochco left his mark on late
20th century television
One of the heavyweights of late 1900s television was Steven Bochco.
Counting critically acclaimed, popular dramas such as “L.A. Law,” “NYPD
Blue” and “Hill Street Blues” on his resume, the late writer and executive
producer was one of the most prolific creators of the era as well as a fixture
during awards season, with 10 Emmy wins and another 24 nominations for
writing and outstanding series. And that’s not including all the individual
laurels his cast and crew won.
Arguably, his flagship creation was “Hill Street Blues.” Starring Daniel J.
Travanti, Michael Warren, Bruce Weitz, Ed Marinaro, Betty Thomas and
James B. Sikking, the hourlong drama followed the lives of police on Hill
Street in an unnamed city. And each episode opened with a signature roll call,
which wrapped up in the first four seasons with Sgt. Phil Esterhaus’ (Michael
Conrad) parting words: “Let’s be careful out there.” (Robert Prosky’s Sgt. Stan
Jablonski did the honors after Conrad’s death in 1983).
The series, which had 26 Emmy wins and another 98 nods during its 1981-
87 run on NBC, can be seen late nights on Heroes & Icons and streamed on
Hulu.

“NYPD Blue” (Hulu): The
struggles of the staff of Manhattan’s
15th precinct were front and center
of this police procedural that aired
on ABC from 1993 to 2005. Based
on the experiences of former NYPD
detective Bill Clark (who would
eventually become a writer and
executive producer here), the series
was acclaimed for its grittiness and
realistic portrayal of the characters’
personal and professional lives.
“Doogie Howser, M.D.”
(Hulu): Bochco shifted into
half-hour dramedy mode for this
1989-93 ABC series that followed
the adventures of Dr. Douglas
“Doogie” Howser, a child prodigy
who graduated medical school at
age 14 and became the youngest
licensed physician in the country.
The storylines mostly revolved
around his balancing the demands
of medicine with teenhood and
the series launched the career
of its star, Neil Patrick Harris,
who himself was 16 when it
premiered.
