The Swiss skier confirmed her dominance with another clear victory, a week after she won her home race in Crans Montana by 0.93 seconds. On Saturday, Kajsa Vickhoff Lie trailed by 0.68 in second for the Norwegian’s first career podium result, and Marie-Mi- chele Gagnon came 0.93 be- hind in third. The Canadian, wearing bib No. 29, bumped Sofia Goggia off the podium. The Italian, who is on a four-race win- ning streak in downhill, fin- ished fourth, ahead of Austria’s Christine Scheyer and Olym- pic super-G champion Ester Ledecka. Star Continued from B1 It’s audacious talk for a teen- ager who has been doing this at the highest level for just a bit more than two years, and who was making her X Games debut this year. She also won bronze in big air on Friday night and will leave Aspen as the first woman to earn three X Games medals as a rookie. But for most of her 17 years, Gu has been thinking big — and succeeding at almost ev- erything she’s tried. Her side job is modeling. Becoming a regular at fashion weeks in Paris and New York, she’s been all over the pages of Chinese versions of Vogue and Harper’s and Elle, and has more high-profile shoots set for later Overall leader Petra Vlhova finished 10th, and the Slova- kian skier saw her advantage over Gut-Behrami in the sea- son standings reduced to 62 points. “A few months ago, people asked me if I was still able to win a race at all. Now people start talking about the (overall) World Cup. It shows how fast things can change in sport,” said Gut-Behrami, who had not won a race between 2018 and 2020. “For me it’s important that I keep my level of skiing, that I can be fast like today and en- joy it.” Several racers were sitting out the races in Germany in order to prepare for the worlds in Italy, most notably Mikaela Shiffrin and Michelle Gisin. Shiffrin, who won the su- per-G world title in 2019, has not competed in a speed race for over a year. She had a this year with American maga- zines. “I love the sound of cam- era shutters,” she said. She’s an accomplished piano player — you can find some of that on YouTube — an avid runner who headlined her high school team’s second-place fin- ish at state championships. She graduated from the rigorous San Francisco University High School in three years and is en- rolled at Stanford, where she’ll start in 2022. “And,” she says, “I like to hang out with my friends, be- cause I’m a teenager, and that’s important, too.” She says she was able to bring some semblance of normalcy to her high-achieving childhood because she grew up in the non- ski-mecca of San Francisco. She’d get invited to parties over Marco Trovati/AP Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami carves a turn during a World Cup su- per-G race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, on Saturday. Gut-Beh- rami won the event. 10-month break from racing in 2020 and only just resumed training in super-G. American Laurenne Ross, of Bend, participated but did not finish. The race was initially sched- uled as a downhill, but bad weather wiped out both train- ing sessions this week. A downhill race can only take place after the athletes had at least one training run on the course. the weekend and tell friends sorry, but she was going skiing. “They would pretty much be, ‘Skiing, OK, whatever,’” she said. “I think a lot of them still think I’m a ski racer, not in freestyle.” Eileen says her mom didn’t really know what “freestyle” was, or that the high-flying flips above the halfpipe and slope- style kickers could be every bit as treacherous as tearing straight down the ski slopes. But Yan signed Eileen up, and thus began a journey that feels destined to make a career-de- fining stop in the mountains above Beijing next February. It was in those early days that Gu faced what any talented girl encounters when entering a realm dominated by boys. “It wasn’t until I was 14 that I had any female ski friends who were my level,” she said. “So, I was constantly thinking, ‘Do I have to prove myself? I’m the only girl here. Do I have to do a bigger trick? Do I have to make myself seem better so people won’t laugh at women’s skiing?’” Regarding another thorny issue, Gu says she’s not naive about some of the hate she re- ceives on her burgeoning social media accounts for choosing China over the U.S. for her ski career. “‘Difficult’ is the wrong word, but she weighed every- thing very heavily,” said her agent, Tom Yaps. Gu, who comes off as savvy as athletes twice her age, seems to grasp the weight of what she’s doing. That was her doing the voiceover on an Adidas ad Another super-G had al- ready been scheduled for Sun- day, the last women’s World Cup event before the Feb. 8-21 world championships in Cor- tina d’Ampezzo. Also Saturday: Noël gets 1st victory in a year on home snow: CHAM- ONIX, France — Clément Noël got his first World Cup win in a year, triumphing on home snow in the penultimate slalom before the world cham- pionships. The French skier won three slaloms in each of the last two seasons but had been waiting for another victory since pre- vailing in Chamonix in Feb- ruary. Returning to the same course Saturday, Noël im- proved from third position af- ter the opening leg as the top two lost time in similar mis- takes halfway through their fi- nal runs. On a course softened by per- sistent rain, first-run leader Marco Schwarz dropped to third, 0.19 seconds behind Noël, while Ramon Zenhäus- ern remained in second and trailed by 0.16. “It was pretty difficult. There were lots of bumps, lots of ruts. I’m usually not so good in that type of condition,” said Noël, adding he regretted his home race was without spectators amid anti-coronavirus mea- sures. “I’m just really, really happy to win this race today. It’s sad we have nobody to celebrate this with us but this was a cool moment.” Zenhäusern’s Swiss team- mate Luca Aerni posted the fastest time in the final run and climbed from 29th position to fourth. The result marked Noël’s seventh career win in his fifth season on the World Cup tour. about women’s empowerment, reading from a seventh-grade essay she wrote about America’s Title IX law, which was written to protect women from dis- crimination in college sports. Recently, Yaps said, Gu received a request to record a video for an upcoming diplomacy summit about improving Chi- na-U.S. relations. “Things like that are liter- ally the reason she’s doing this,” Yaps said. Asked what she wanted her message to be as she embarks on a whirlwind year that fig- ures to land her on a mountain in her other home country, Gu said she’d love to see more girls in China think about opportu- nities they didn’t know existed. She’d like to see a lot more peo- ple like her on the mountain — maybe one or two of them pushing her for a gold medal someday. “Change is made from the bottom up,” she said. “All of us were little girls surrounded for the first time by people we were scared of in the beginning. But I just want to see more people out there.” Our team of doctors passion for enhancing smiles brings you the best in modern dentistry.
