2 in 5 Americans live where
ICUs are running out of space
Associated Press
Straining to handle record numbers of
COVID-19 patients, hundreds of the nation’s in-
tensive care units are running out of space and
supplies and competing to hire temporary trav-
eling nurses at soaring rates. Many of the facili-
ties are clustered in the South and West.
An Associated Press analysis of federal hos-
pital data shows that since November, the share
of U.S. hospitals nearing the breaking point has
doubled. More than 40% of Americans now live
in areas running out of ICU space, with only
15% of beds still available.
Intensive care units are the final defense for
the sickest of the sick, patients who are nearly
suffocating or facing organ failure. Nurses who
work in the most stressed ICUs, changing IV
bags and monitoring patients on breathing ma-
chines, are exhausted.
According to data through Thursday from the
COVID Tracking Project, hospitalizations are
still high in the West and the South, with over
80,000 current COVID-19 hospital patients in
those regions. The number of cases reported in
the U.S. since the pandemic’s start surpassed 25
million on Sunday, according to Johns Hopkins
University.
Encouragingly, hospitalizations appear to have
either plateaued or are trending downward across

And in the long run, the machine should
prove cost-saving. A gallon of hypochlorous acid
was costing the department $35 per gallon at the
lowest bulk rate. Now, the department can make
it for about 4 cents per gallon.
And Hamilton calls it “game-changing.”
“When (COVID-19) first came out, we’d go
on a COVID patient call, and we’d transport in
the ambulance, right? And we’d come back, and
it would take literally 45 minutes to an hour to
decontaminate the ambulance,” Hamilton said.
“Well, that ambulance needs to be available for
emergency calls, and if it’s out of service because
of decontamination, that’s a problem for our
community.”
The hypochlorous acid, aerosolized through
an automotive paint sprayer, has sped up the
process, reducing apparatus cleaning time to less
than five minutes.
“It literally breaks it down to 0.8 microns and
sprays everything,” Hamilton said. “Because it’s
in a fog, not even a mist, it’s a fog, it gets into ev-
ery nook and cranny. It goes into porous fabrics
… and decontaminates literally everything. You
don’t have to go down and wipe every single
Biden to reinstate travel limits
President Joe Biden on Monday will formally rein-
state COVID-19 restrictions on non-U.S. travelers
from Brazil, Ireland, the United Kingdom and 26
European countries that allow travel across open
borders. South Africa will be added to the list.
all regions. It’s unclear whether the easing will
continue with more contagious versions of the vi-
rus arising and snags in the rollout of vaccines.
The situation in Oregon
In Oregon, hospitalizations and intensive care
unit placements for COVID-19 continue to drop
from December levels.
The number of hospitalized COVID-19 pa-
tients across Oregon was 310 on Sunday, the same
as on Saturday. Of those, 80 were in intensive care
unit beds, three fewer than the day before.
Hospitalization and ICU figures, in general,
have declined since December and early January.
For example, about a month ago, on Dec. 20,
the state announced that there were 530 patients
hospitalized in Oregon with COVID-19, and
121 were in ICUs.

nook and cranny to decontaminate the ambu-
lance. We can just spray it and fog it. So that’s
what’s sped up the process.”
Molalla Fire is not keeping the wonder prod-
uct all to itself but is sharing it with other fire de-
partments including Aurora, Canby, Woodburn,
Colton and Sublimity as well as other entities
including Country Christian School, Molalla
Police and the Oregon Department of Forestry
in Molalla.
Once Molalla Fire receives a new label from
the Environmental Protection Agency, poten-
tially in the next couple weeks, the department
will even offer the product to the public. Instead
of charging a set price, they will simply ask for
donations.
“If you want to donate $1 per gallon, that’s
great,” Hamilton said. “If you want to donate
$50 a gallon, that’s great too. If you can’t do-
nate at all, that’s fine too. It’s all going to be a tax
write-off for that person who does donate. That
(money) just goes into our district fund to try
and recover the cost of the jugs and my time to
run the machine, the electricity, the water we
have to use, the salt.”
Hamilton, who also teaches a fire safety class
at the high school, hopes to offer the product to
the school district to support in-person learning.
