LAURIE
METCALF
METCALF
Laura Elizabeth “Laurie”
Metcalf was born on June 16,
1955, in Carbondale, Ill. The
eldest of three siblings, she is
the great-niece of playwright
Zoe Akins. Initially a major in
German at Illinois State Univer-
sity, she switched to theatre, but
had doubts that it would yield a
steady career for her.
In college, Metcalf became
acquainted with fellow theater
students John Malkovich, Joan
Allen, Terry Kinney, Glenne
Headly and Metcalf’s eventual
first husband, Jeff Perry. She then
became a charter member of
Chicago’s renowned Steppen-
wolf Theatre Company, which
Perry and Kinney founded with
Gary Sinise.
Metcalf began her New York
stage career in an Off-Broadway
Steppenwold production that
earned her Obie and Theatre
World awards, and other plays
she appeared in there includ-
ed revivals of Neil Simon’s
“Brighton Beach Memoirs” and
“Broadway Bound.” She won
another Obie and a Lucille
Lortel Award for “The Other
Place,” and when it moved from
Off-Broadway to Broadway, she
starred in it with daughter Zoe
Perry (“Young Sheldon”).
Tony Awards in consecutive
years were given to Metcalf for
her work in “A Doll’s House,
Part 2” and “Three Tall Wom-
en.” She also earned Tony
nominations for “Misery” and
“Hillary and Clinton.”
Among Metcalf’s many movies
have been “Desperately Seeking
Susan,” “Internal Affairs,” “Uncle
Buck,” the four “Toy Story” films,
“Runaway Bride,” “Bulworth,”
the remake of “Fun With Dick
and Jane,” “Leaving Las Vegas,”
“Scream 2” and “Lady Bird” ...
the latter garnering nominations
for her for various awards in-
cluding an Oscar.
Though her television credits
also include “Saturday Night
Live” (for only one episode as
a featured player), “The Norm
Show,” “Desperate Housewives”
and “Getting On,” Metcalf argu-
ably is most famous for playing
Jackie Harris, first on “Rose-
anne” – for which she received
three consecutive Primetime
Emmy Awards – and currently
on the ABC spinoff “The Con-
ners,” which earned her another
Emmy nomination.
