Rain Showers Snow Flurries Ice Warm Front Stationary Front Cold Front Source: OnTheSnow.com NFL Continued from B3 Minkah Fitzpatrick: Some people questioned the decision the Steelers made last season to deal a first-round pick to Mi- ami for the playmaking safety despite an injury to quarter- back Ben Roethlisberger that made the playoffs a remote possibility. Fitzpatrick elevated a de- fense that helped Pittsburgh finish 8-8, meaning the pick fell to 18th instead of the top 10. Fitzpatrick has had another strong season with 11 passes defensed and four intercep- tions, including a pick-six in the first game against Cleve- land. Chase Young: The No. 2 overall pick in the draft has had a big rookie season in Washington. He helped bolster an already strong defensive line that has been the strength of the team and gives it a chance against Tom Brady and the Buccaneers. Young had 7½ sacks and four forced fumbles. Young started the season fast and then hit a lull. But he has seemed to find his stride late in the sea- son with four sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recov- eries and one defensive touch- down over the final six games. Jonathan Taylor: After a slow start to his rookie sea- son in Indianapolis, ranking tied for 23rd in rushing with 428 yards in his first 10 games, Taylor emerged as a star down the stretch to get the Colts to the postseason. He ran for 741 yards in the final six games with 150 against the Raiders and 253 in the playoff-clinch- ing win over Jacksonville. Only Derrick Henry was more pro- ductive in that stretch and Taylor finished third on the season with 1,169 yards. The Colts will likely need another big performance to keep pace with the high-powered Bills on Saturday. Chris Godwin and Mike Evans: The two Tampa Bay wideouts have been among the most productive receivers in the league but never managed to make it to the playoffs until Brady arrived in 2020. Evans is the first player to begin his career with at least 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first seven seasons but is nursing a left knee injury that leaves his status in doubt this week. God- win was slowed a bit by injuries this season but still has 3,015 yards and 23 TDs over the past three seasons. Prospects Continued from B3 Invitations have also been ex- tended to defensive tackle Has- kell Garrett and linebacker Pete Werner. There are perhaps 20 play- ers who could potentially be drafted in April after play- ing for the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes. Quarterbacks Ohio State’s Justin Fields was amazing against Clemson, throwing six touchdown passes and showing off accuracy and arm strength all over the field. He also displayed poise and toughness, playing most of the game after taking a nasty hit to his side. That came after an inconsis- tent and truncated season that has called into question Fields’ status as the best available QB behind Trevor Lawrence. “There’s a lot of buzz around the league about (BYU’s) Zach Wilson being the No. 2 pick in the draft behind Lawrence,” said Dane Brugler, a draft an- alyst for The Athletic. “Fields, with what he did, it changed that a little bit. He’s making teams kind of go back and re- consider.” The Alabama defense has Jay LaPrete/AP file Ohio State defensive back Shaun Wade plays against Indiana in No- vember in Columbus, Ohio. Wade may have a chance to prove his worth to NFL scouts if he has any success in defending Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith in Monday’s championship game. had some bumpy moments, but it is still the most talented group Ohio State has faced, starting with SEC defensive player of the year Patrick Sur- tain III. The junior will prob- ably be the first cornerback drafted if he declares. Plus, Fields will be tested by Alabama schematically. “Give (Tide coach) Nick Sa- ban 10 days to figure you out and to find your weaknesses, that’s terrifying,” said Matt Miller of NFL Draft Scout. Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is among the second tier of quarterbacks in the upcom- ing draft that includes Florida’s Kyle Trask and maybe SMU’s Yesterday City Hi/Lo/Prec. Especially on the heels of former Alabama star Tua Ta- govailoa’s rookie NFL season, which was solid but far from spectacular. 41/34/1.89 63/46/0.00 72/64/0.55 66/43/0.00 90/75/0.00 18/-12/0.00 70/61/0.00 34/32/0.25 66/52/0.00 39/32/0.06 93/66/0.00 86/59/0.00 77/59/0.00 37/19/0.00 81/72/0.51 35/28/0.25 36/27/0.41 37/28/0.00 81/62/0.21 63/56/0.00 57/50/0.00 62/48/0.00 74/59/0.28 77/68/0.00 52/43/0.00 36/32/0.00 36/30/0.17 86/76/0.03 41/31/c 68/57/c 75/63/pc 67/39/pc 85/66/pc 35/13/pc 72/57/pc 35/30/sf 65/46/t 36/25/pc 79/73/pc 79/56/s 73/54/pc 33/12/s 78/63/pc 36/32/c 39/36/c 36/28/c 79/61/t 57/49/s 58/49/r 61/47/pc 78/59/t 78/68/pc 47/36/c 39/28/s 34/28/sn 82/74/pc Mecca Mexico City Montreal Moscow Nairobi Nassau New Delhi Osaka Oslo Ottawa Paris Rio de Janeiro Rome Santiago Sao Paulo Sapporo Seoul Shanghai Singapore Stockholm Sydney Taipei City Tel Aviv Tokyo Toronto Vancouver Vienna Warsaw Prep sports Continued from B3 Ron Schwane/AP Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) scrambles against the Pittsburgh Steelers last Sunday in Cleveland. Mayfield leads the short-handed Browns against the Steelers in the wild-card round. The Browns’ last playoff appearance was in 2002. Wade’s world Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade made the All-America team, but that was a generous evaluation based on reputation and last year’s play when he was a nickelback and slot corner. His move to the outside this season has been spotty at best and indicative of Ohio State’s cornerback play in general. Now, he gets to face Smith, a sure first-rounder, and the gemstone of Alabama’s prolific passing game. “If I’m Alabama and Steve Sarkisian, I’m getting DeVonta Smith on (Wade’s) side of the field as much as humanly pos- sible because no one has been able to stop him,” Miller said. Brugler said Wade’s future might still lie at safety. “At the same time, if he goes out there and performs at a high level against Smith, then all of a sudden that’s a differ- ent conversation,” Brugler said. “But based on what we’ve seen from Shaun Wade this year, it just doesn’t seem like a realistic possibility.” In the trenches Alabama defensive tackle Christian Barmore is a third- team All-American and a third-year sophomore, so he is no sure thing to enter the draft. The 310-pounder has not played at a consistently high level that would make him a lock first-rounder. Still, Brugler said the defensive line class is thin at the top of this draft and Barmore has a chance to be best of the bunch. Barmore will face a good test in Ohio State’s interior line. All-America guard Wyatt Da- vis and Meyers are likely Day 2 draft picks with bottom of the first-round potential. Sermon delivers Ohio State running back Trey Sermon has gone on a re- markable late-season tear with 636 yards rushing in his last three games. He should ex- pect to see a lot of linebackers Dylan Moses and Christian Harris, the top two tacklers for the Crimson Tide. Nagy said Sermon looked like a potential starting NFL running back before injuring his knee last season while at Oklahoma. “He’s gotten his opportunity these past few weeks there for Ohio State and he’s taken full advantage of those, but to do it against a Nick Saban defense in a national championship game would just be that next level for him,” Nagy said. Q: Is there a threshold the OSAA has to reach to return to sanctioned sports, or do all counties have to be open for sports to return? A: We have talked about it with our board. Does there need to be a percent- age of schools that are able to? As of yet, we haven’t done that. It has been more of the approach we took in Season 1 — if you can do it, then let’s do it. Q: If sports like volleyball (indoor sport) and football (currently prohibited) can- not go on Feb. 22, could we see those sports move or canceled? A: We talked a lot about that when we met with the board in December and we shuffled the seasons around. Certainly the out- door activities we feel good about. Those indoor ones or football, or basketball and wrestling later in the year that are still prohibited, if something doesn’t change at that point and they are still prohibited, then what are our options? Options would include moving them again. Q: With schedules al- ready cut to the bare bones, can seasons be condensed anymore or will there have to be decisions to cancel the seasons? A: We condensed them a little bit in August, and then condensed them again. I think you get to the point where you can only con- dense something so much. I don’t know that we are there; if we aren’t, then we are really close. It is really interesting because the nar- rative has changed as we have talked with people. Early on it was ‘we want eight weeks.’ As time has gone on and because of the mandates and things we haven’t been able to play, some of those responses have changed to ‘we just want to play any- thing.’ e e Reporter: 541-383-0307, brathbone@bendbulletin.com
