ELIZONDO
Hector Elizondo was born
Dec. 22, 1936, in New York.
His parents moved there from
Puerto Rico, and early on, he
displayed interests in music
and sports ... singing with
a boys choir at age 10. He
attended the High School for
the Performing Arts, but his
talent for baseball drew the
interest of scouts for the San
Francisco Giants and the Pitts-
burgh Pirates.
Though he dropped out of
college to support the young
family he had at the time,
Elizondo eventually resumed
acting and dancing studies, ul-
timately landing roles in such
plays as “The Great White
Hope” and on the daytime
television serials “The Edge of
Night” and “The Doctors.”
Elizondo’s focus turned
principally to doing TV and
movies in the 1970s. The
bounty of credits he accrued
during that decade included
“The Landlord,” “The Taking
of Pelham One-Two-Three”
and “Report to the Commis-
sioner” on the big screen, and
“All in the Family,” “Kojak,”
“Maude” and “The Rockford
Files” on the resume of his
series-guest-star work.
In the 1980s, Elizondo
met producer-director Garry
Marshall, and he then would
be cast in every movie that
television-sitcom wunderkind
Marshall directed. Over the
ensuing years, those films
encompassed “The Flamingo
Kid,” “Nothing in Common,”
“Overboard,” “Pretty Wom-
an,” “Beaches,” “Pretty Wom-
an,” “Runaway Bride,” “The
Princess Diaries,” “Valentine’s
Day,” “New Year’s Day” and
“Mother’s Day.”
As a series regular, Elizon-
do has starred in TV versions
of the movie “Freebie and the
Bean” and “Down and Out in
Beverly Hills,” and he won an
Emmy Award for his role on
the medical drama “Chicago
Hope.” Other shows of his
have included “a.k.a. Pablo,”
“Kate Brasher,” “Miracles,”
“Century City” and “Cane,”
and he’s had recurring parts
on “Grey’s Anatomy” and
“Monk.”
