The Bend Assembly of God
Church was first organized as such
May 21, 1935, consolidating the
work of a people of like Pentecost
al faith, which had been worship
ping in Bend for quite a few years
previous.
This present assembly, embraces
those great truths, which are held
in common by many other evan
gelical groups, known as funda
mental and orthodox. They believe
the Gospel; The Way-The Truth;
the Life, is not resident in organ
izational systems, methods or rit
uals but is centered in the person
of the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
The Life being in the Son, and so
in the scriptures (And this is the
record, that God hath given to us
Eternal Life, and this life is in the
Son. He that hath the Son hath
life and he that hath not the Son
hath not Life. II John 5: 11-12.) So
the belief is that a true Christian
is one of whom the Bible testifies
as thus: Christ in you, the hope of
Glory. Col. 1:27. Christ Jesus being
brought into the heart of the be
liever by the agency of the Holy
FIRST ASSEMBLY OF GOD
REV. O. R. CROSS
Spirit who is called the Spirit of
Christ. Romans 8:9.
The Assembly of God owes its
existence as a religious body, sep
arate from other evangelical
groups to the belief, that apart
from the agency of the Holy Spirit
as The Spirit of Christ, who minis
ters Christ to the heart and life of
the believer, The Holy Spirit can
be received in His own Wonderful
distinctive personality and the
manifestations of the Holy Spirit
Himself are available to a believ
ing and an obedient church as re
corded in I Cor. 12:4-11. This ex
perience and life is called by Jesus,
The Promise of the Father, The
Baptism of the Holy Spirit ,not
baptized by the Spirit into the
body of Christ) but members of
the body of Christ baptized with
the Holy Spirit, by the Lord Jesus
Himself. Matt. 3:11.
This church also believes that one
of the initial physical evidences
of the receiving of the Holy Spirit,
will be the speaking with other
tongues as the Spirit gives utter
ance. This is not the Gift of
tongues which can be received and
is to regulated in the public
assembly, but accompaines the re
ceiving of the Holy Spirit and so is
not regulated at His initial recep
tion. Acts 2:4; 10:44-46, 19:2-7.
They believe that it is Christ in the
heart, who produces Christian
character, which is the fruit of the
spirit; and the Holy Spirit brings
equipment for service, through his
Gifts and manifestations of His
own personal power.
Bible conversion (a born again ex
perience, Christ in the Heart) with
an acceptance of true Bible teach
ing qualifies for membership.
They recognize that all true be
lievers regardless of denomination,
constitute the true Body of Christ
and looks on with interest as other
old line groups receive the exper
ience and teaching which brought
into existence the body and minis
try of the local Bend Assembly of
God church.
A new building is now under consideration.
