Feb. 25 thanks to an unlikely
looking "angel" named William
Bernard MacDonald, Jr.
MacDonald, who bankrolled
the third Floyd Patterson-Inge-mar
Johansson title bout at Mi
ami Beach in 1961, guaranteed
$625,000 for delivery on the two
fistic bodies two months hence.
He may pick up a few "chips"
In the process but his honest
reasons are for "kicks and out
of civic spirit."
Which makes him more of a
gun-burned Santa Claus in this
Instance than an "angel."
And MacDonald actually looks
more the St. Nick part. A pink
skinned, portly man, he lacks
the white beard but is noted
for his ever-present smile and
unfailing joviality.
"Uncle Bill," as he is known
to his intimates, is an acknowl
edged sports nut. He is a 45
per cent stockholder and treas
urer of Tropical Park race
track, owns a 160-acre horse
farm at Del Ray, Fla., owns
the Tampa Tarpons base
ball team, formerly owned both
the Atlanta Crackers and Ports
mouth Tides ball clubs and is
Chairman of the National Ad
- visory Board of the Profession
al Golfers Association.
Owns A Yacht
The 55-year-old MacDonald
once tried to buy 25 per cent
of the Washington Redskins. He
owns a 50-foot yacht, is chair
man of the Miami Horse Show
to be held in early February
and plays to a 10 handicap at
.golf with memberships at Key

and. when they insisted he get
behind the wheel and took the
finances out of his hands, Bill
quit "or I might have 35 years
seniority today as a Chicago
bus driver."

Next he started his own New
York-to-Chicago bus line, made
$250,000 when he sold out, tried
to parlay that and went broke.
After that he had the parking
concession for a Miami Beach
hotel, delivered new trailers
and was one of four people li
censed by the government to
provide emergency trailer hous
ing at war-time construction
sites. With the profits, MacDon
ald started buying up trailer
factories until he had 10 and
wound up selling them for $6,
785.000 "all cash, no trading
stamps."
While he was In the trailer
business, MacDonald had a 68
foot job complete with swim
ming pool which he displayed
at major golf tournaments. Once
he asked Johnny Weissmuller,
the former Olympic swimming
champion and movie "Tarzan,"
to dive into the pool at the Los
Angeles Open for a fee of
$500. Weissmuller asked for
$1,000.
"Okay," said Bill, "but I
won't put any water In the
pool."
"For a thousand," said Weiss
muller, "I'll dive into a damp
rag."
You don't talk "dives" In
connection with prize fights, of
course. But it seems unlikely

The win put Los Angeles in

ver. The other three teams are
tied for fourth, five points
back of Seattle and Los Angel

for Los Angeles to give the
Blades a 3-1 advantage that
stood tip. John Sleaver and
