Denver moved nine points ahead of the pack Wednesday night with a 4-0 win over hu miliated San Francisco. Van couver moved into the three way tie for fourth by disposing of Portland, 3-1. San Francisco, which has lost eight of its last 10, managed only 28 shots at Denver's league leading goalie, Al Millar. Bob Perreault blocked 35, but let shots by Bruce Draper, John Sleaver, Rudy Migay and Gordy Redahl slide by. Goalie Marcel Paille of Van couver had a good night at Portland. Vancouver grabbed a 2-0 lead In the first stanza, but In the second period, Vancou ver took 3 shots and Portland 21. Only one Portland effort scored, however, and Vancou ver's Bob Kabel hit the clinch er early in the third stanza. The Canucks, Seals and Port land now all have 26 points. The fight for fourth place is second in importance only to the battle for first spot, since four teams land in the post-season playoffs and two don't. Tonight's lone WHL game finds Denver at Los Angeles tients instead of vice versa it has been in the past.. Coaches of both clubs have been on hand for several days and already tentative lineups have been set with some sur prising results. "Our backs are going to have to go both ways," said coach Jack Mollenkopf of Purdue, who heads the East staff. "That means that Sherman Lewis of Michigan State Paul Martha, Pitt, Paul Krause, Iowa, and Paul Warfield, Ohio State, all will see a lot of action going both ways." Head coach Jim Sutherland of the West pulled a slight sur prise when he announced that Vem Burke of Oregon State and David Parks of Texas Tech, two of the greatest pass-catching ends in the nation, will di vide one end position on offense and Parks will also play a lot on defense. "And we'll use Dalton Hoff man of Baylor at fullback," said Sutherland. "We just had to move Tom Crutcher of Tex as Christian into the defensive because he's such a great line backer." Crutcher stands 6-3 and weighs 210 and was the No. 3 draft choice of the Green Bay Packers who probably plan to use him on defense anvwav.
