Randy Snider
takes firsts

By Web Rubl
Bulletin Staff Wrlttr
BACHELOR BUTTE - It was
a great weekend for teenage
Skyliner skier Randy Snider.
Taking advantage of hard
packed snow and good surface
sld conditions, Snider took the
Jeri Gillis Memorial Novice Ski
Races by a veritable mountain
storm.
Snider, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lester Snider, 364 E. Green
wood Avenue, captured both the
downhill and the slalom events
for boys. His double win, cou-
gled with countless other Sky
ners who soared home ahead
of other competitors, gave the
Bend ski aggregation a grand
weekend on the slopes of Bach
elor Butte.
Snider took Saturday's slalom
course in 1:08.7. .two seconds
ahead of second place winner
Frank Morris, also a Skyliner.
Sunday, he captured the down
hill with a time of 1:07.7, beat
ing runnerup James Simonson
of the Yakima Valley Ski Club
by about the same margin.
Generally speaking, the Sky
liners took the boys' events
hands down. The races, how
ever, are run for individuals.
There is no team effort. No
team trophies are given.
In the girls events, however.
It was Betty Lugar of the Yak
ima Valley Ski Club that did
them all in. She, like Randy
Snider, captured both events.
Miss Lugar sailed home to
win Sunday's downhill with a
time of 1:17.3. She won the sla
lom course in 1:13.8.
Yakima Valley skiers and the
Skyliners did most of the plac
ing. Several skiers went unat
tached. Skiers from other clubs,
South Eugene Ski Team and
the' Oswego Ski Club, also com
peted. Cascade of Portland also
had representatives as did a
defunct Santiam Club.
Jeri Gillis Memorial races, a
PNSA - sanctioned event, is
strictly a novice affair. Skiers
get "points" for honors won.
Finishers were as follows:
Girls 1st, Becky Lugar,

Condon pulls away, 61-50
Special to Tha Bulletin
CULVER Condon must be
the team to beat in local Class
B basketball. At least that's
what Art Ellis is thinking here
after his Bulldogs were beaten
'Saturday night, 61-50.

It was a close one Saturday

What happened to the Bull-
Petit; Hawks
get to Lakers
by 102-95 score
By United Press International
A tested formula for beating
the Los Angeles Lakers is to
hold their scoring twins of El
gin Baylor and Jerry West to
less than 20 points each,
The St. Louis Hawks com
bined that essential ingredient
with a 26-point effort by Bob
Pettit Sunday night to whip the
Lakers 102-95. The victory
moved St. Louis to within per
cer.tace points of the pace-setting
Lakers in the NBA's tight
Western Division race.
The San Francisco Warriors
also gained ground on Los An
geles with an easy 122-97 win
over (he Baltimore Bullets in
Sunday's only other game.
St. Louis led practically from
the opening tip-off. Los Angeles
pulled to within one point of the
lead several times in the sec
ond half, but never could tie
nor go ahead.
Baylor, who hid missed the
Lakers two p: rvious games
with a heavy cold, was held to
19 points. West, who had scored
37 points Saturday night, could
manage only 13. Dick Bamett
was high for Los Angeles with
21.
San Francisco employed an
effective fast break for its easi
est victory of the season. Wilt
Chamberlain, as usual, provid
ed the bulk of the Warriors of
fense with 41 points.
Don Kojis topped the Bullets
In scoring with 23 points.
dogs? Foul shots, for the second
straight night, spelled the dif
ference. It meant Culver's Wa
terloo Friday night when the
Bulldogs dropped a 61-58 deci
sion to Wheeler County at Fos
sil. After the Condon crew got a
small point spread on gift toss
es, the rest of the final stanza
saw them pull steadily away
as the Bulldogs faded.
There's no doubt about It.
This week will see Coach Ellis'
Bulldogs working on shooting
from the foul line. They also
will see plenty of work on de
fense before the 'Dogs play
Dayville December 28 in a non
league go.
Saturday night saw Bob Van
Orsow come in off the bench to
pour through 15 point3 and
share scoring honors with team
mate Rick Urback. Parrish, a
Condon sub, pulled a similar
stunt, and canned 14.

Welterweight champ seeks
go as midweight challenger
NEW YORK (UPI) - Welter
weight champion Emile Griffith
makes an all-out bid for chal
lenger's role in the lively mid
dleweight division Friday night
at Pittsburgh against top mid
dleweight contender Rubin
(Hurricane) Carter.
Griffith of New York, fighter
of the year and the only man
to win the 147-pound crown
three times, already has beaten
160-pound contenders Hol
ly Mims and Jose Gonzalez in
1963.
And now Emile Is favored at
9-5 over slugger Carter of Pat
erson, N.J.
If Griffith, 24, lives up to the
odds by harnessing the "Hurri
cane" he would be an extreme
ly attractive challenger at the
box office, in a "battle of cham
pions" for Joey Giardello's new
160-pound crown.
Giardello of Cherry Hill, N.J.,
took the title from Nigerian
Dick Tiger at Atlantic City,
Dec. 7. Now Joey admits he
has a "gentlemen's agreement"
for a return title fight with Ti
ger. However, the World Box
ing Association (WBA) banned
return-bout contracts or agree
ments some time ago.
Carter, 26, already is In chal
lenging position and he plans to
file "official" challenges with
the WBA and New York State
Commission if he beats Griffith.
Archie Litman is promoting
Friday's nationally televised 10-
rounder at Pittsburgh's Civic
Arena. New York's Madison
Square Garden Boxing Corpor
ation Is serving as television
producer.
Meanwhile slugeer norenuno
Fernandez of Cuba and Miami
Beach earned another middle
weight contenders' fight at the
Garden "some time in Febru
ary" by turning the tables In
bloody fashion on Argentina's
Juan (Rocky) Rivero at the
Garden last Friday night.
Left-hooker Fernandez, who
Is ranked seventh by the WBA,
stopped Rivero at the end ot
the seventh round in their
