By Rick Du Brow UPI Staff Writer HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Mon day's confirmation that the Jerry Lewis ABC-TV series will leave the air after its Dec. 14 show marked an abrupt end to tne seasons snori-iivea Dig gamble: A weekly, live two hour program in key viewing time. TTinimh thp sprips took a pretty widespread critical rap ping, wun mis reviewci in agreement, and though the rat ings didn't help Lewis either, it is still no cause for rejoicing when such a maior television undertaking goes down the drain, inere are 100 jew guuu shows available to be happy at a failure. And tnougn Lewis has made no secret of his star rtnm nr hie nrominence. it would take a petty person to find satisfaction in the prob lems of any human being be fore a nationwide audience. Alone, that is, without a part ner like his old sidekick, Dean Martin. There have been some very funny moments in the series but the effect of the tasteless occasions destroyed many of them that could have been sa vored. Basically, however, Lew is simply overextended and overestimated his considerable talents in thinking he could just "wing it" for two hours on na tionwide television, with only himself as the basic prop. As a group, his shows have certainly been putting a terrible load of faithfulness on such old fans as this one, who for some reason keeps coming back for more, knowing that no miracle will take place and wondering whatever happened to the shy, underdog Jerry Lewis of the movie days with Dean Martin. For Lewis, personally, I am glad the series is going off, be cause I think that any further weekly exposure, without a drastic attitude change and a willingness to find a firm direc torwould do nothing but dam age to his career. Even if a man has millions, there is no pleasure seeing him when he is down or taking an extra poke at him either. Technically, the ending of the show was because of a differ ence of opinion regarding for mat, according to a joint net work-Lewis statement. Whatev er the reason, one can only re gret the results all around, and hope that maybe a few lessons are learned. Saigon claims mass since revolution SAIGON (UPI) More than 700 guerrillas who had been al lied with the Communist Viet Cong rebel forces have come over to the Vietnamese govern ment side in the past two days, reliable military sources said Monday. The guerrillas were reported to have brought weapons with them. Some reports, which could not be confirmed, said their armament included mor tars and machine guns. The Hoa Hao are a militant splinter Buddhist sect who had a private army during French colonial days. Their army was crushed in 1045 during the ear ly days of the former Ngo fam ily regime but remnants con tinued to fight in loose alliance with the Communists. Elsewhere, four U.S. airmen were injured early today when a heavily-armed gas turbin? helicopter made a forced land ing due to mechanical failure near the town of Pleiku in the central Vietnamese highlands. The new casualties were re ported a day after a military spokesman announced that a U.S. Army sergeant was killed in a Communist ambush attack in the central highland jungles to become the 110th American combat fatality in Viet Nam's war against Red guerrillas. The sergeant was not identi fied pending notification of rel atives.
