No one who has worked as long and successfully in a busi ness as has Ebsen deserves the fate of being stuck in the pub lic mind solely In his most triv ial role. Thus it was a pleasure during Thursday night's hour to set him don black tie and tuxedo and do some of the grand hoofing he is capable of, from a tap number to comedy. Maybe you forgot, or never heard, that he came to atten tion In the Florenz Ziegfield show "Whoopee" that starred Eddie Cantor, and that he and his sister Vllma danced togeth er In musicals and clubs for several years, and that he did all right In Hollywood too among other things, as Shirley Temple's dancing partner in "Captain January." An Ebsen Fan And It you have been an Eb en fan, as I am -and believe, as I do, that the main accom plishment of the "Hillbillies" is to give him a chance to cash In then you may also remem ber him recently in the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's," louchingly portraying a middle- Rocky has fwo major weaknesses WASHINGTON (UPI) - Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller goes into his campaign for the Republi can presidential nomination with two major weaknesses his liberal Image and his re marriage. These two handicaps were factors often mentioned In a UPI survey of Republican gov ernors, slate chairmen and na tional committee members. Partly leaders in more than 40 states were contacted after Rockefeller's formal announce ment Thursday that ha was a candidate. It was taken for granted that the New York governor and Sen. Barry Goldwater of Ari rona, a still unannounced can didate, were headed into a long struggle leading up to the Na tional Convention next July. Rockefeller was generally rat ed the underdog. A Rockefeller vs. Ooldwnter contest was commonly translat ed into a liberal vs. conserva tive race, although some GOP leaders contended that differ ences between the two men were overemphasized. Foreign policy, civil rights and welfare programs were cited as specific points of difference. There was little inclination to discount the political burden created by Rockefeller's marri age to a divorced mother of four children last May after his own divorce. Of the party leaders ques tioned, one or more in 26 slates felt that Rockefeller's chances were damaged to some degree by his remarriage. Some felt that this was a serious handi cap which would never vanish; some felt that the unfavorable reaction had rartly subsided and would fade even more. These appraisals were offered even by Republicans w h o de plored consideration of Rocke feller's personal life as a factor to the campaign. Party officials In only five tates dismissed the remarriage as Insignificant and eight others refused to guess about its poiiti-1 cal etfects. I Friday, November 8, 1963 aged rural father who wants to marry a younger girl, Audrey Hepburn. Except for a forced "Hillbil lies" bit Thursday night, with Ebsen mercifully in character only briefly, he, Crosby and Caterina Valcnle made a pleas ant trio for songs, dances and not-so-snappy sayings. A group of about 40 high school stu dents, called "The Young Americans," provided some ad mirable choral work. Only An dre Previn, who contributed some uninspired piano num bers, added nothing to (he per forming, though as musical conductor and arranger he set a good background. Crosby In Fin Form I don't know why Crosby would want to interrupt his fishing trips or golfing to keep on making shows, but I'm glad he does. It's amazing, but when the old boy gets out on a stage whether he's tops or not he does indeed have the ability or the quality to make you feel that things can't really be as bad In the world as they some times seem. It's easy to snick er him away, but he's got it. Thursday night he was In fine form, his sense of musical gaiety blending neatly all around, looking like a million dollars, and reminding you im plicitly every so often that there's a touch of executive suite in that fishing-golfing leg end. Needless to sav, in the hoofing session with Ebsen and Miss Valente, Crosby exerted the least effort and stole the sequence. Sometimes I think he and Fred Astaire run the 440 every morning just so they can embarrass the rest of us in pub lic. The Channel Swim: An NBC TV spokesman says the net work expects to stick with the well-done "Espionage" series despite the natural ratings truiible It has experienced against "The Beverly Hillbil lies and "Ben Casey". . .ABC TV's "Burke's Law" series is trying to get Jeannette Mac Donald and Nelson Eddy to play a couple of battling opera singers. NBC-TV made it official that the daytime game show "You Don't Say!" will replace the cancelled "Redigo" on Tuesday nights starting Jan. 7. . .Anoth er NBC-TV davtimer, "People Will Talk," will be bounced shortly and replaced by still another game show, "Let's Make a Deal". . .Allen Funt. creator of CBS-TV's "Candid Camera." has a sort of audi ence gripe series set to take over for the axed "Ulynis" dis aster. (UPI) A 38- year - old engineer was charged with murder today in the sniper slaying of a fellow scientist who was shot as he ate dinner with his wife and seven children. Allan N. Blumenthal of Pea body, Mass., was charged with killing computer expert Ben jamin M. Gurley, 38. He was questioned by police for nearly 12 nours. At his arraignment in district court, Blumenthal pleaded inno cent. Judge Otis M. Whitney ordered him held without bail at East Cambridge jail pending a hearing Nov. 22. Police did not immediately say what motive there was for the slaying. They said Blumen thal had made no admissions. Gurtey was shot to death Thursday night less than a month after he told police he feared he would be murdered. He was killed with a single shot from a .45 -caliber pistol fired through the kitchen window of his home in this fashionable suburb 20 miles west of Boston. Gurley toppled from his chair with a bullet in his head as his stunned wife and children looked on. Five hours laler Blumenthal was picked up in Peabody. Po lice said he was a former busi ness associate of Gurley. It was reported he bore a grudge against the victim. Gurley had complained that he feared for his life because the man being questioned had harassed and spied on him. Po lice made nightly checks on Gurley's home since he filed the complaints. Gurley had worked with the suspect at Digital Equipment Co. until 10 months ago. At that time Gurley left the job to be come vice president of Informa tion International, Inc. Chief James E. Finan Jr. said the apparent motive for the shooting was a personal ity thing" but added "there was much more to it than that." He did not elaborate.
