Church of the Nazareno
Rev. E. David Ward law
In I Corinthians 1:18-25 we read:
For the preaching of the cross is
to them that perish foolishness;
but unto us which are saved it is
the power of God. For it is writ
ten, I will destroy the wisdom of
the wise, and will bring to nothing
the understanding of the prudent.
Where is the wise? where is the
scribe? Where is the disputer of
this world? hath not God mad&
foolish the wisdom o this world?
For after that in the wisdom of
God the world by wisdom knew
not God, it pleased God by the
foolishness of preaching to
save them that believe. For the
Jews require a sign, and the
Greeks seek after wisdom: But we
preach Christ crucified, unto the
Jews a stumblingblock, and unto
the Greeks foolishness; But unto
them which are called, both Jews
and Greeks, Christ the power of
God, and the wisdom of God. Be
cause the foolishness of God is
wiser than men; and the weakness
of God is stronger than men.
Man is searching every day for
something that will satisfy the
hunger of his spiritual nature.
Some seek after power, some seek
after wealth, some seek after wis
dom and others seek in various
areas of life to try to find satisfac
tion for a hunger that can be satis
fied only in the plan of God to
meet man's spiritual need. Christ
is God's gift to the world to meet
the deepest and greatest need of
humanity .... that is salvation
from sin. According to the scrip
tures, it is God's good pleasure to
save them that believe . . . that is,
believe that Jesus Christ came to
save those who are lost in sin. In
Acts 4:12: Neither is there salva
tion in any other: for there is none
other name under heaven given
among men, whereby we must be
saved. It is evident that the preach
ing of Christ is foolishness to those
who seek after wisdom, power and
all other like accomplishments of
this world but refuse to take
Christ as God's provision for man's
salvation.
Paul, the Apostle, in his letter to
the Ephesians 2:8, 9: For by grace
are ye saved through faith; and
that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God: Not of works, lest any
man should boast. The grace pro
vided is God's love and mercy
manifested in Jesus Christ as the
gift of salvation, but the responsi
bility is man's in accepting this
provision by faith. In Hebrews:
11:6: But without faith it is im
possible to please him: for he that
cometh to God must believe that
he is, and that he is a rewarder
of them that diligently seek him.
And what is the reward of seeking
the Lord? . . . Isaiah 55:6, 7 says.
Seek ye the Lord while he may be
found, call ye upon him while he
is near: Let the wicked forsake his
way, and the unrighteous man his;
thoughts: and let him return unto
the Lord, and he will have mercy
upon him: and to our God, for he
will abundantly pardon. Man has
sought and found wealth, wisdom
and the honours of this world but
these have failed to satisfy man's
hunger for spiritual need. But
there are those who have sought
and found Christ and have found
love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
gentleness, goodness, faith, meek
ness, temperance: against such
there is no law.
