3rd quarter score
saves Tiger upset
Redmond 'Cats dog Bulldogs,
but lose tough battle, 6-0
Special le Th. Bulletin
HERMISTON Coach Doc
Savage's once - treed Panthers
from Redmond almost pulled the
prep upset of the weekend here
last night when they lost a close,
knock-down drag-out Intermoun
tain Conference grid test to favor
ed Hermiston, 6-0.
It was a grand effort for Red
mond, but Hermiston proved too
much for the Panthers when the
Bulldogs halted a last gasp Red
mond effort in the final quarter.
The Hermiston line, backed up
against its own goal post, stiffen
ed and halted a 73 yard Panther
drive at the Bulldog goal.
It happened this way: Redmond
moved the ball deep into Bulldog
territory as the final minutes were
ticking off the clock. Savage's
warriors drove all the way from
the Panther 20 to the Hermiston

miston then commenced a 30
yard drive that ended in Webb's
TD flank movement.
Hermiston's balanced attack
that worked so well against
Prineville a week ago, didn't click
with the same efficiency against
Redmond. The fighting Panthers
held on doggedly throughout the
contest. Hermiston, a prc-season
favorite to knock off defending IC
champion Pendleton, found the go
ing rough, and it got tougher as
the contest wore on.
In that series of downs that pro
vided Hermiston with the TD,
Savage's Panthers intercepted a
Bulldog aerial. The effort would
have ended the Bulldog drive, but
Redmond was penalized for pass
interference. And the Hermiston
wheels rolled on.
It was a disappointing anti-climax
to a great Redmond effort.
Concerning his Panthers' stub
bornness Coach Savage said, "de
spite the loss, our boys looked
real good. . .I'm real proud of the
showing we made."
Savage cited no 'Cats in particu
lar, but announced that ho was
pleased with the overall effort of
the entire squad. It was the sec
ond straight loss for the Panthers
who lost a heart breaker at home
last weekend to Mac Hi.

Seattle Totems
SEATTLE (UPI)-About 25 ath
letes were expected to report to
Coach Keith Allen today for the
opening of the Seattle Totems
training camp prior to the begin
ning of the Western Hockey Lea
gue season.
Two players will be missing.
Last year's goalie, Al Millar,
won't report. Allen earlier this
week confirmed reports that he
was trying to trade Millar to the
Denver Invaders because t h e
goalie did not fit into Totem
plans.
Larry Zeidcl, defenseman pur
chased from the Hersey Bears of
the American Hockey League, is
not expected to report until early
of the half, Stan Earnest cut
loose with an aerial to Rick Ur
back for 25 yards and a touch
down as the gun went off. Bob
Van Orsow split the uprights and
Culver led at intermission 7-6.
Dufur scored the game's initial
TD when Culver fumbled on the
Bulldog 15. Four plays later a
Dufur halfback by the name of
Clausen battered through to pay
dirt. The conversion try went for
naught.
But the third quarter is when
"it happened." Dufur ran back
the kickoff that commenced the
second half all the way to the
Culver 27. A face mask violation
put the ball in Dufur's possession
down on the Culver 12. Dufur
then hammered away for 6 plays
before the Wasco County men
could move it across. They did
however and Dufur led, 13-7. Hood

Crook County. Prineville's hard
charging forward wall failed to
provide running room for the
backfield and the visitors were
forced to take to the air lanes

La Grande posted the first tally.
It came in the final two minutes
of the first quarter when Ted Hil

of the period when Rob Rush took
a handoff from quarterback Gary

left end and hit paydirt. The play
covered five yards.
Prineville's tally was set up by
a sustained drive that started on
about the Prineville 30 and culmi

was mainly a ground attack. It

A 5-yard backfield-in-motion pen
alty nullified a 45-yard scoring
play. Junior signal caller Jim El
liott set loose a long bomb that
hit Bob Rush right on the but
ton. The latter trotted into pay
dirt unmolested.
Elliott minutes later provided
more thrills for a one-sided Tiger
crowd. In the final seconds of the
game he hit Rush three times
with more missiles that put the
'Pokes back down there knocking
on the Tigers' door.
One pass covered 40 yards, an
other went for 20, and the third
one was a 15-yard howitzer. When
the dust cleared the favored visi

Rob Rush was the outstanding .
Prineville back, gaining 55 yards: "
The biggest impression that the
Prineville coaches received wa
that passing wizardry of Elliott.
"He almost pulled the game out '
for us," Dowling said after the
disappointing deadlock.
Dowling mado special mention
of Ted Milliard, La Grande's bro

to stop and his broken field ex
