CARNIVAL
"Oee, Dad, I thought you'd be crazy about Jimmy
the way you hate to see food wasted!"
Ilya causes
new stir
in Russia s
MOSCOW (UPI)-Maverick So
viet writer Ilya Ehrenburg, se
verely criticized in March by Pre
mier Nikita Khrushchev for un
orthodox views, caused a new stir
in Moscow's literary world today
with a strong plea for experimen
tation in art.
He also called for "friendly re
lations" with Western writers to
acquaint Soviet authors with
works written and published
abroad.
He balanced these views with a
declaration that "many wonderful
books" have been produced under
the Soviet Union's official school
of "socialist realism."
Ehrenburg's comments were
published in the newspaper Liter
ary Gazette, now under the con
servative editorship of Alexander
Chakovsky.
The remarks were made origi
nally in a speech to a conference
of Soviet and European writers in
Leningrad. Their publication
especially by Literary Gazette
was taken as an indication that
the crackdown on Soviet intellec
tuals has not been as severe as
many Western observers at first
anticipated.
This was Ehrenburg's first pub
lic statement since Khrushchev
accused him of falling into "a
gross ideological error."
VOICES U. S. CONCERN
WASHINGTON (UPI) The
State Department has expressed
concern over the arrest of a
former South Korean premier.
Department Spokesman Richard
I. Phillips said Monday the
charges agairet Song Yo Chan
apparently predated his 1961-62
term in office.

wife and mother of nine who
works part-time, has turned over
half of a $4,172 bingo prize to
life-long friend Betsy Blunn.
"While we were still at school,
we agreed to share anything we
won." Mrs. Casterton explained
Monday.
