Oregon court rules ex-Red
can be admitted to bar
SALEM UPI The Oregon Su
preme Court, by a 5-2 decision,
ruled today that a former mem
ber of the Communist party could
be admitted to the Oregon Bar.
The high court approved the ap
plication of Bernard Jolles of Port
land for admission to !he bar.
' The State Board of Bar Exam
iners had recommended that his
application be denied on the
ground that he had failed to es
tablish that he was a person of
good moral character because of
having been a member of the
Communist party from 1W9
to 1957.
Justice Kenneth J. O'Connell
wrote the majority opinion.
; Justice William C. Perry wrote
a dissenting opinion in which
Chief Justice William McMcAllis
ter joined.
The high court concluded that
Jolles Is now free from Commun
ist influences which disrtorted his
moral judgment and that he is a
person of good moral character.
' The majority of the State Bar
Board of Examiners found the
evidence of his rehabilitation un
eonvlnclng. " The court said It concluded that
Jolles' refusal to disclose the
names of his former colleagues
for fear that it would harm them
was sincere and that it should
not be used as a basis for donylng
him the privilege of practicing
law.
The high court noted that Jolles
voluntarily disclosed his past
membership In the Communist
party when he made application
to take the bar examination.

The accident occured in a closed
range district where cattle are pro
hibited from running at large.
The high court found that Reter
did not violate the statute be
cause he did not "permit" the
cattle to break out of a barn and
run onto the highway.
Death victim
known in Bend
A motorcyclist who lost his life
Monday in a crash near Burns
was well known in Bend.
He was Terrence Culp, resident
of Burns. He was lead guitar play
er with "The Weirdsmen" who
have appeared in Bend, at the
Domino, on a number of occa
sions, and were to play here again
this Friday.
The youth, 19, died when his
cycle struck the side of an auto
mobile as it was making a turn,
investigating officers said.

Ronald Lee McDonald, Bend,
who pleaded not guilty to a charge
of excessive motor noise, was
found guilty Tuesday in a trail
before District Judge Joe Thal
hofer. McDonald was fined $10.

service, he was employed as a ski
life operator at the Bachelor
Butte ski area. Both men are
members of the Redmond unit of
the Oregon National Guard, and
will resume that affiliation after
their present tours of active duty.

Friends learn
of Suhre death
Warren Lee Suhre, about 20, a
former Bend resident, died Mon-;
day in Phoenix, Ariz., as the re- j
suit of accidental electrocution,
local friends have learned.
Warren Lee was the son of Mrs.
Marie Suhre and the late Andy
Suhre. His parents were in busi-!
ness in Bend for a number of
years. They operated Bend Sand
and Gravel and Bend Redi-Mix,
selling to H. J. Curl Sr. and H. J.
Curl Jr. about eight years ago. i
They moved at that time to Phoe-:
nix. i
In addition to his mother, Suhre
Is survived by two sisters, Mrs.
Dave Perrin, Prineville, and Hel
en, Seattle, and a brother,
Dwayne, in Salem.
Details of the accident were not
known here.

taken by death
Sidney R. Jolley. community;
resident of the past 12 years, died
apparently of a heart attack Tues
day afternoon at his home. He was
59 years of age.

was born on October 23, 1903 in
Rusk, Texas. He made his resi
dence at 1039 Jacksonville, and
was a member of the Eagles

Three federal tax Hens have
been filed in the Deschutes Coun
ty Courthouse.
A lien in the amount of $136.36
has been filed against Floyd and
Cora Malone, owners of Malone's
Grocery in Bend.
Other federal tax liens filed
were against Dean A. Korish of
Bend in the amount of $640.92,
and E. W. and M. Walker in the
amount of $1145.49.
