Building code under fire
Special to The Bulletin
PRINEVILLE Prineville's
building code and on-the-site
building inspection came under
fire at city council meeting Tues
day evening, in city hall. Two lo
cal contractors, visiting the meet
ing, asked councilmen for a more
thorough building inspection on
new construction.
Les Fridley and Hilmer Jones,
builders, cited foundations they
believed to be faulty which they
had observed being poured for
new homes in the city. Both con
tractors told councilmen they had
never been visited, during a con-
istruction job, by Fred Stone, the
I city building inspector.
Jones added that he felt the
present city construction code is
inadequate, but added that en
forcement of the existing code
would "at least assure a reason
able building."
He added, with emphasis, "If
you don't have a good building
code, and don't enforce the one
you do have, you'll soon have
shacks next to good homes
throughout the city."
Fridley suggested that the
building fee might be abolished if
the city inspector is not inspect
ing construction, and thus save
contractors some money.
Councilmen. after some sur
prise and bewildered comment.
agreed that the contractors had
presented a qualified complaint
Confusion changed to concern, and
H was agreed to ask Stone to ap
pear at the council's luncheon
meeting Wednesday noon for fur
ther discussion.
Stone, a former contractor, is
paid $25 a month for his inspec
tion services.
