Disabled Veterans arriving
for convention start here
Disabled American Veterans of
the Department of Oregon were
arriving in Bend this afternoon for
registration and an executive
committee conference, prior to
the opening Friday at' 9 a.m. of
their 1963 convention. Headed by
Bend man, Chet C. Myers, as
state commander, the convention
will continue through Saturday.
All meetings will be at the Pilot
Butte Inn.
Wayne L. Sheirbon, Seattle,
Wash., national vice-commander,
will be here for the convention.
Accompanying him will be Perry
E. Dye, also of Seattle, national
executive committeeman repre
senting the 13ui district.

the convention opens. The re
sponse will be by Department
Commander Myers.

Central Oregon College has re
ceived a number of dictating ma
chines with electronic components
from a local business firm. Al
Eriksen of Eriksen's Stationery
made the donation of the equip
ment to be used either as train
ing units or supply units for other
electronic training devices.
"We of Central Oregon College
appreciate very much the thought
fulness and generosity of the
many public spirited people in
Central Oregon who have given
useful materials and equipment
for our many training programs,"
said Bob Johnson, dean of the
School of Applied Arts and
Sciences.

was slowing to turn left when he
was struck from behind. Operat

Police arrest
G. L LaFrenier
Gary Lee LaFrenier, 21, who
returned to Bend recently from
Albany, was arrested yesterday
by a Bend police officer, on a
charge of parole violation. He is
held at the Deschutes county jail,
for the State Parole Board.
LaFrenier was placed on pro
bation by Circuit Judge Robert

The auxiliary of Stevens-Chute
post, American Legion, heard a
talk by a visiting officer, re-elected
last year's officers, and nam
ed delegates to tha state conven
tion, at a meeting last night in
the districct courtroom at the
courthouse.
Mrs. Madelene Patrick, Wasco,
district president, was the speak
er. Officers who will serve for an
other year are Mrs. L. R. Edmi
son, president; Mrs. Valborg
Evans, vice - president: Mrs. Joe
Russell, secretary, and Mrs. Chris
Kostol, treasurer.
Mrs. Edmison, Mrs. Russell and
Mrs. Craig Coyner are delegates
to the state convention August 1-3
in Pendleton. The president, sec

McMinnville. Her grandson, Roger
Heusser, was graduated with

Stephens was charged in justice
court with injury to gates, and
was fined $20.50 plus $4.50 court
costs, and given a 9May sentence
in the county jail. Sixty days of
the sentence were suspended, up
on making restitution of the dam
age. Remainder of the term Is to
be served on weekends, according
to court records.
In other recent justice court ac
tion, Mathan Puckett was fined
$25 plus costs for assault and bat
tery and Burk Whitaker was fined
$20.50 for the same offense. He
was placed on six months' proba
tion. Lack of a boat license cost
Gerald Prentice $5.50 and James
McGee paid the same fine for the
same offense. Robert Stinnett
paid $5 for lack of a motor ve
hicle license and John Newton
paid $3 for disobeying a stop sign.
Failure to stop at a stop sign al
so cost Sherlyn Cross $3 plus
costs.
George Powers and Daniel Stin
nett were given 90 days in Rocky
Butte jail for petty larceny and
larceny in a building.
In cltv court this week. Flovd
Elkins was fined $15 for violation
of the basic rule and Elinor White
paid $25 for the same offense.

Lumber firm,
union meet
PORTLAND (UPI) - The first
meeting between officials of one
of the two big Northwest lumber
unions and an employer since a
strike hit part of the industry last
week was scheduled here today.
Officials of Simpson Timber Co.
were scheduled to meet with
negotiators for the International
Woodworkers of America. The
company has a meeting set with
the Lumber and Sawmill Workers
Union next week.
Simpson has been bargaining as
an independent and was not
affected by a strike against St.
Regis Paper Co. and U.S. Ply
wood last week. Four other com
panies shut down their operations
in retaliation, idling about 19,000
men.

er said today talks with both
sides involved in the dispute were
continuing in efforts to bring them
together at the bargaining table.

Denis Cronin
dies at age 58
Denis Cronin, 58, a native of
Ireland and long time resident of
Bend, died this morning at the St.
Charles Memorial Hospital. He
had been in the hospital since
February.
Mr. Cronin was an employee of
the City of Bend since August,
1945. He was a veteran of World
War II, having served in the ar
my, and made his home at 516
East Franklin. Surviving Mr.
Cronin are many cousins in Cen
tral Oregon and other parts of the
state.
Mr. Cronin was a member of
the Catholic Church. Rosary
services will be held at the Nis
wonger & Reynolds Chapel Fri
day at 8 p.m. A requiem mass
will be held at the church Satur
day at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Al
ben Cullen in charge. Burial will
be in the Pilot Butte cemetery.

ees who long served with Mr,
Cronin.
Vandals ransack
Hawes vehicle
David L. Hawes, 1245 Balti
more, returned to find his parked
car ransacked and vandalized
early this morning at the 700
block on E. Lafayette Avenue.
He told police someone stole a
carton of cigarettes, ransacked the
glove compartment, deflated tha
tires and damaged the ignition
system. The car was moved
ahead a few feet from where
Hawes had left it about 10:15 last
night.
Police are investigating.
