uation in the fir Industry, cul
minating this week in strikes, is
being watched with interest by
management of tho Ochoco Lum
ber Co, in Prinevilie, according
Co a spokesman for the firm.
' The Ochoco mill is the only one
of the five major mills in the
Crinevlllo area that is unionized.
Other mills are "open shop," a
survey shows. Workers at the
Ochoco mill are members o( Lo
cal No. 3-200, IWA, with George
(Jardlner as president. Stuart
Sheik is manager of the Ochoco
dumber company.
There have been no new devel
opments at the Ochoco mill in the
labor situation since a meeting
on May 24 between mill manage-
ment, representatives of Region
3, 1WO-CIO and the negotiation
committee of the Prinevilie local.
The situation is currently quiet,
a. spokesman stated.
It Is impossible at this time to
predict future developments at
Ochoco, in the labor situation, it
was stated.
'The Ochoco mill is not affiliat
ed with any negotiating group, it
was pointed out, and is in a
somewhat Independent position
comparable to some other pine
mills of eastern Oregon.
Gardeners close
out fiscal year
The annual luncheon closing the
Mirror Pond Garden Club's fiscal
year was held on Wednesday with
11 members present.
The new president, Mrs. Boyd
liltchiser, presided. A round table
discussion and planning of an ex
cellent program for 1963-64 was
the main business of the after
noon. The, program chairman, Mrs.
Ellen Forswall, made a list of
all ideas presented. These were
sifted, voted upon and assigned
to members for next year's meet
ings. On July 10 the club will meet
with Mrs. Jack Grimm. There
will be a tour of Mrs. David Wil
son's rose gardens.

Seven new divorce cases
filed, four decrees issued
Seven new divorce cases have
been filed in circuit court In the
past week or so, and four de
crees have been issued.
Phyllis Ann Gerdes has filed for
divorce from Gerald D. Gerdes,
to whom sho was married July
22, 1001, in Bend. She asks cus
tody of the couple's nine-month-
old child, $100 monthly support
and equity in real property at 472
E. Kearney Avenue, suggesting
that each party take personal ef
fects and an automobile.
Jocklyn E. Ranslam, in her
complaint against Edward R.
Ranslam, asks a $1,000 cash set
tlement for property interests,
custody of the couple's infant
child and $75 monthly support.
The marriage was Feb. 14, 19G2,
in Aloha. . ,
Marian Cates, suing W. A.
Cates for d-i-v-o-r-c-e, asks that
her maiden name, Bromley, be
restored to her. The plaintiff asks
for a pickup and a trailer house,
with the defendant to take a 1956
hardtop. They were married May
3, 1961, in Borgcr, Texas. There
are no children.
Alida Johnson seeks a divorce
from Marvin Johnson, stating
they have lived apart since 1957.
Bottlers tieup
settled Friday
PORTLAND (UPI) A strike
which threatened to leave stores
here without any soft drinks wns
settled Friday night.
Members of Local 162 of the
Teamsters Union voted to accept
a three-year contract offered by
the Portland Bottlers of Carbon
ated Beverages Association.
The vote was 9!) to 93. The pact
was offered to the union Thurs
day. The settlement came as supplies
of soft drinks were reported
dwindling In the Portland area.
The union went on strike May
2R and placed pickets t seven
Portland area bottling plants. The
plants were closed. About 330
persons were affected. More than
201) are in the union.
The plants were expected to re
sume operations today. However,
deliveries to stores will not be
resumed until Monday.

whom she was married July 10,
1961, in Kennett, Mo. She asks
that her prior name, Inez Naomi
Martin, be restored to her. There
are no children or property
rights.
Norma June McColn seeks a di
vorce from Numa W. McColn,
asking custody of the couple's
four children and $50 monthly sup
port for each. The marriage was
Jan. 12, 1947, in Redmond.
Claudia Marie Ladrow, 323 N.
Sixth Street, Redmond, was given
a divorce from David Ladrow,
Anchorage, Alaska. They were
married Dec. 17, 1958, In Long
Bench, Calif., and have three
children. The plaintiff was given
custody, and $35 monthly support
for each child."
Anita Darlene Martin was given
a divorce Irom lirvin i-ugene
Martin. They were married
March 9, 1959, In Portland. There
are no children or property
rights.
A divorce from Jim A. Leach
was granted to Donna Leach.
Married Dee. 17, 1960, in Rono,
Nevada, both are Madras resi
dents. There are no children or
property rights.
William C. Stanfill lost his di
vorce case against Elsie P. Stan
fill, and she was awarded a de
cree, his complaint dismissed
with prejudice. Her former name,
Elsie Pauline Haines, was restor
ed to her. StanfiU was enjoined
from going about the premises
known as West Side Tavern. The
marriage was Jan. 1, 1955, in
Reno.

this year will go to a missionary

PRINEVILLE Lumber oper

terested in the Burnt Corral tim
ber sale of some 19 million board
feet of ponderosa pine in the
Ochoco National Forest ae invit
ed to take a "show-me" trip to
the sale area June 10, according
to an announcement by C, L.
Clark, forest supervisor.
The sale will also include a
quantity of Douglas fir and other
species. Those taking the escorted
trip through the sale area will
leave Rager ranger station Mon
day at 10 a.m. The sale area
covers some 3,900 acres.
Sale date is June 24, at 2 p.m.,
in the office of the forest super
visor, in Prinevilie. Expiration
date, the terminal point for log
ging the sale, has been set as
March 31, 1966.
Logging the sale will involve
construction of 9.2 miles of perm
anent road and reconstruction of
25.2 miles of existing roads. The
average age of the timber in the
sale area, Clark said, is about
250 years.
Sermon planned
by missionary

PRINEVILLE Ben Ralston,
missionary appointee to West
Pakistan, will preach the sermon
at the morning service, at 11 a.m.
at the First Baptist Church. Ral
ston is a registered pharmacist,
and will administrate a hospital
in the mission field.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralston have been
assisting in the vacation Bible
school for the past week, present
ing a study on missions to young
people.
During the coming week, Miss
May Halstenrud, missionary to
the Navajo Indians in Arizona,
will be with the vacation Bible
school. She will also speak to the
adult Bible study class Wednes
day evening, June 12. Some 300
children are attending the vaca
tion Bible school at the First Bap
tist Church.

munity church, a special guest
will speak, Rev. Tom Maurer,
representative ot the National
Council of Community Churches,
at a fellowship dinner at the
church June 10, at 6:30 p.m.
Maurer will discuss the work
of the Council. Nursery care will
be provided during the dinner and
program. Those attending the din
ner are asked to bring their own
table service. ,
On Sunday, June 9, Rev. David
Abbott, pastor, will preach on the
topic "New Frontiers." Christian
Endeavor meetings for young peo
ple will be held at 6:30 p.m. as
usual, but the regular evening
worship service has been discon
tinued during the summer
months.
This evening, June 8, the Ship
mates Couples club will hold a
potluck dinner, to be followed by a
session of bowling.

was fined $250 for driving while
intoxicated in recent city court
action. Conducting a speed con
test on a highway brought a
suspended fine of $100 to Juanita
Osborn.
Being drunk in an auto cost
Fred McReynolds and Albert
Zabder $25 each, and being drunk
in public brought a $20 fine to
Donald Green.
In justice court, Hugh Williams
paid $3 and court costs of $4.50
for disobeying a stop sign. Victor
Ordwiler paid the same amount
for obstructed rear vision. Fifty
cent fines plus the usual court
costs were levied on Nancy Bishop
and Ben Hayes for having no
operator's license and on Morgan
Bear for not having a motor ve
hicle license.

Limit on FBI term approved
WASHINGTON (UPI) The
Senate Judiciary Committee,
looking beyond the eventual re
tirement of J. Edgar Hoover,
voted Thursday to limit the next
director of the Federal Bureau of
Investigation to a term of 15
years.
The committee also approved
without dissent some other plans
for the day Hoover leaves the of
fice he has occupied for 39 years.
If Congress approves, the next
FBI director will be appointed by
the president and confirmed by
the Senate, and will not be eli
gible for renomlnation after he
completes the Initial 15-year
term.

crash victim
PORTLAND (UPI)-Dee Ander
son Shankles, 69, Portland, was
pronounced dead on arrival at a
hospital early today after his car
was involved in a three-vehicle
rear-end collision.
Multnomah County Sheriffs
Deputies said Shankles' car
smashed into the rear of another
vehicle halted at a stoplight. The
second car was pushed into the
one ahead of it.
A passenger in the third car,
Mary Ann Cooper, Portland, was
treated for minor injuries at a
hospital and released.
