Prairie Dog Did the Job Wall by Bury, ing Him Alive. It would not seem a very easy thing to bury a snake alive, but that Is what au Oklahoma man saw some prairie dng.4 do. Ho was restliiR under a tree when he noticed a commotion among some prairie dog near blm. They would run up to a certain spot, poop at something and then scamper bnck. Looking more closely, he saw fifteen to twenty dops alKiut n rattlesnake,' which presently went. Into ono of the dogs' holes. No sooner bad it dlappeared than tho little fellows began to push In dirt. evidently to fill up the hole. By tho time they had pretty well coverea uie entrance the sunko stuck bis head up through the dirt, and every dog scam pered off to a safe dtstanco, all the time barking. The snake crawled to another hole about a rod distant and went In. Then forward came the dogs again, and all went to work to push np earth to the holo. This time they succeeded and completely covered the entrance. This done, they proceeded to beat the earth down, employing their noses for this purpose. When they had rendered the earth ijulte hard they went away. The observer examined their work and wan surprised to find that they had packed the earth In solid with their noses ana had sealed the snake inside. Los An geles Times. Most of Them Are Caused by Untia'l neaa and Careleaaneaa. The Ore lima lu the United Ktutes Is nliout J -VMM io a day. or an aggregate of IT.'iO.Oim.iXXl a year. Careful obser vation from .detailed statistics compli ed on the subject shows that most of tills loss wopld be prevented by the ob servation 'of reiiHomilile precautions, particularly In the direction of more tidiness. Hixty-five per cent of all Arcs take place In homes, and cases show that VI per cent of all tires are due to careleiKiiess, Ignorance or both. The CI !er cent occurring In borne. It Is readily shown, would never occur If person had taken reasonable care In respect to tidiness. Ilubblsb is the chief cause, 'and rubbish does not necessarily mean the accumulation of paper and things of that character In and around buildings, but the unneces sary accumulation of old furniture, magazines, carpets, supplies of all kinds In cellars and. attics svblcb ac cumulate dust and He there for years. Whnt applies to the home In respect to rubbish Is true to a marked degree In many business premises. Just a llt tlo thought and the expenditure of a little Liuiu along thexc lines generally j would greatly reduce the fire loss. Tbe nopcuce ui ore ciiiuguiHuc rs in lue sverage homo or business premises Is a serious omission. Careless handling of matches, careless use of oil, the ac cumulation of oily rags and waste ma terial and a host of small matters like these are the causes of a great many fires and a great deal of loss.
