IriR April, Tho Hand Transmission
Company has announced nn offer
of n 2fi prize. This Is the opening
nun In tho advertising campaign of
tho compuny, which lias the distinc
tion of being the first local concern
to manufacture on a commercial
scale, a Hand Invention. Tho Six
peed transmission Is tho Invention
of Krnent Dick.
Manufacture of transmission parts l
has been in progress, for nearly two
wocks, nnd assembled transmissions'
will bo ready to deliver about April
H. Tho present capacity of tho
plant, employing seven men, Is es
timated at 75 u month; but with tho'
addition of three more men, It can
be boosted to about 120. Tho pay
roll at present Is a little over $2,000
n month. j
Should tho demand require n'
greater output than that number, a
second mid if necensnry a third shift'
will hu added, rather than enlarging
tho plant and purchasing new ma-1
chlnery, officials of the company!
stated today. Liy this means tho out-1
put could ho raised to 340 transmis
sions a month.
Ovotieiid ai
All manufacturing problems have I
been solved with less difficulty than I
was anticipated, It was stuted today,'
and tho fact that numerous orders i
have already come In, although no'
advertising has been done, Indicates
that nulcs will bo as successful. On '
account of the low overhead cost of ,
manufacturing In llend, the company
expects to bo able to compete In price
with other transmissions which do
not liuve the attractive features of
the Slxpced.
A now muffle furnace for heat
treating tho steel used In the trans
mission, ha just been received at
the Hand Iron Works, where tho
plant Is Installed completing tho
equipment of the shop. It Is equipped
with an electric oil bath, the heat
of which Is controlled by a temper
ing bath thermometer.
The manufacturing department Is
under the general supervision of A.
i:. Ault, who was trained In the
plants at Wills, England. The cast
ing department Is under tho super
vision of J. F. Casey, formerly owner
and manager of the Pacific Hrnss &
Steel Foundry of Portland. Under
his supervision, tho brass end mem
bers and tho aluminum caso are be
ing cast locally,
IXuvlrc n 1'rovtu Huccons
Casey Is also In charge for tho
Hend Iron Works of casting "Hend
auto signs, nnd "Rend" emblems for
other purposes, similar to tho ono on
the block presented to the Hend Com
mercial club Wednesday, This Is
being dooo largely for advertising
purposes; but the plant Is also put
ting out auto size brass bushing
stock, under Cooy'n direction.
J. I). Harrctt, declared to bo ono
of the best welding experts In the
northwest, Is In chnrgo of tho weld
ing In tho shop.
Demonstrations of the work which
can be done with a Ford car or truck,
equipped with tho Sixpeed, will be
conducted in Hend soon, it was an
nounced today. One of the surpris
ing features Is the fact that much of
the vibration ordinarily noted In a
Ford car Is eliminated, possibly be
cause of the slow turning of tho eng
ine, company officials state.
A truck equipped with tho trans
mission recently pulled a load of 6,
000 pounds of car wheels from tho
Shcvlln-Hlxon machine shop to the
Bend Iron Works plant. Cars using
the Sixpeed have traveled 62 miles
nn hour, and 32.4 miles on n gallon
of gasoline. It la stated,
Ernest Dick, tho Inventor of tho
transmission, drovo last August front
San Francisco to Bond In Cl hours,
Including all stops, and filled his
radiator with wator only onco after
leaving San Francisco.
