As near ns can bo dotermincd, tho nolso was caused by the explosion of a meteor, bollevcd to havo fallou somowhero to tho southeast of tho city, but tho point at which tho supposed motcortc visitor halted is yet to bo found. A downward flash, lighting up tho sky, accompanied by a whirring sound and followed an instant later by a crashing explosion, was tho de scription given by H. McDonald, district gamo wardon, ono of tho few who actually saw tho phenomenon. Tho light appeared to tho southeast of Bend, Mr. McDonald said, but how far ho was unablo to judgo. A logger from ono of tho Brooks-Scnn-lon camps gavo nearly tho samo story and Mrs. Ethel Spakcr an cm ployo of tho Downing cafe, saw tho light and hoard the explosion whllo on her way homo from work, early in tho morning. Others who heard, but did not see, spoke of n lessor sound, as of tho impact of somo heavy body striking tho ground, fol lowed Immediately by the detonation. Brooks-Scanlon camp No. 1 was tho point farthest from Bend whero tho explosion was hoard. It was very loud and shook tho bunk houses nt tho cam pi. A peculiarity attending tho occur rence of tho early morning was that every sleeper who was awakened by tho crash was ready to bellovo that the nolso had originated within a few blocks of his own home noon numerous explanations wero advanced, including lightning, nnd boiler, gasollno and dynamite explo sions. D. F.BROOKS IS BEND VISITOR On a tour of mills operated by the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber company, a party headed by D. F. Brooks, presi dent of tho company and father of H. K. Brooks of this city, arrived In Bend last Thursday from British Co lumbia and remained hero through tho romalndor of tho week. Accompanying Dr. Brooks woro Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Foley of Eastport, FJa.; G. K. Koyes, Kentwood, La., and L. D. Carpenter, Seattle. Mr. Foley 1b manager of the company's jnlll In Eastport and Mr. Keyes, who 1s a brother of J. P.
