That onllstcd men nro to bo grant ed furloughs to return to tholr homes and work during tho harrcst season vrns tho advico received by County Agricultural Agent Ward from tho war dopartmont yeatorday. Tho length of tlmo of tho furlough and tho ability of the applicants to leave for such a furlough depends, accord Ing to tho announcement, on the status of bis military training, and whether such furlough will Interfere with his efficiency as a soldier. Applications for such furloughs must como from tho farmers and crop owners and not from tho sol dier himself. This application must be mado to tho local board, and is divided into six classes, or divisions. Division 1 provides for tho signa ture of tho person making applica tion for the soldier and for whom his services aro desired. Division 2 provides for a complete statoment of facts from tho applic ant for tho soldier for whom the ap plication Is made. In this section a completo survey of tho applicant's farming operations must bo made. Division 4 provides for tho recom mendation and finding of tho local board. Division 4. Tho county agricul tural agent concurs in or dissents from tho recommendation and find ings of tho board. Division 5. In this section the soldier Is required to tako tho oath rogardlng his ability to do farm work, and requires his promiso to comply. Division 6 constitutes the approval of tho commanding officer for tho ap plication. Tho application Is granted the sol dier for a furlough, providing tho ap plicant agrees to pay tho average wages paid In tho vicinity. Soldiers must signify their wishes to engage In farm work, and on no instance will a soldier be compelled to en gage in farm work unless ho so de sires. Speaking of tho matter, County Agent Ward said: "Thero aro a number of farm boys from Deschutes and Crook counties now in military training. Parents of these boys who desiro to havo them homo dur ing tho harvesting season aro re quested to get In touch with the lo cal board and the county agricultural agent, whero they can gain further information. Application blanks will bo iurnished either by the local board or tho county agent's office." (From Friday's Dally.) Fuol purchasers In Dond, nnd for that matter tho ontlro state, will In n short timo havo ta make declaration of tho amount of fuel used during the past year, according to an order from Fred J. Holmes, todoral fuol administrator for Orogon. Although no limitation on tho amount of fuel that may bo stored has boon fixed, arrangements havo been completed for registering ovory fuel purchase in tho state. Within a fow days ovory purchaser of wood or coal will bo compelled to fllo n declaration as to tho amount of fuol used last year, tho quantity re maining on hand and tho quantity desired. Tho statomont must bo cer tified to and any wilfully talso declar ation opens tho way for government prosecution. Purchasers will fllo their fuol or ders with their doalors as usual and tho doalors In turn will forward tho data to tho fuol administrator's of fice along with their report. Doalors will havo tho application blanks on hand In tho near futuro. Under tho new arrangements tho dealer's report will show for what purposo tho fuel Is being purchasod. By this method Mr. Holmes will bo ablo to keep In close touch with tho needs of tho stato and tho information will be of tho utmost valuo in arranging for wood and coal distribution. Speaking of the matter of taking tho loafers out and putting them to work, as pro posed at tho weekly meeting of the Commercial club last Tuesday, Mr. Carmody stated thero wero very few loafers around the resorts In Dend, and they wero a detriment rather than an aid to tho business.
