WITH THE FRENCH ARMIES IN THE FIELD, Jan. 15. (By Mall.) Inspiring heroism which sets an ox ample for any soldier Is tho story ot tho French adjutant, Joseph Edward Carnlor. Garnler was In a regiment ot In fantry which fought its way Into a German position In the Wood of Chovreur and held Its ground against Numerous counter attacks. The fol lowing day after a continuous battle of hand grenades and rifles, the first line needed ammunition. The routo to the munition depots was swept by German 'machino guns and sniper's bullets.' Gamier volunteered and started with a group of 12 men. Ten steps and four.pjen fell. Half way no ono remained 'but Garnler. He escaped unharmed, reached tho depots and again traversed the fire-swept routo with all tho grenades and cartridges lie could carry. Without a word ho started back. The Germans, enraged Tjy his audacity, concentrated their tiro on Garnler but again he miracul ously roached tho depots In safety. Here he organized a now group ot volunteers. Inspired by his marvel ous sangfroid, all wanted to follow him back to the first lino. But choos ing a number necessory to carry mu nitions enough to last through tho night ho ordered his followers for ward. A short distance and Garnler tell fatally wounded. An army citation, unique for its words ot praise, told of Carnler'sj bravery, I Tho French colonials uro probably tho fiercest fighters In the French nrmy. Tho Germans nt nny rnto fear them moro than nnythlug else on earth. It Is said that these "colored cemmen" never take n prisoner. Frost Bitten, narold Mueller, n young civil engi neer of Richmond, whose work carries him In the country nnd In association with a good many fnrmers, tells this story: Ills mother told him to be on the lookout for nny bargains the farm er might offer him. Whllo driving along tho road ono day In his car ho noticed n sign on tho fence which read. "Take homo all the pumpklni you want free." Mueller thought to him self, "Hero Is a farmer after my own heart, who Is not a tightwad t" He got three of the largest pumpkins ho could And nnd returned home with his ilnd. Ho wns quite proud of his find, nnd a few days Inter Inquired of his mother when ho could hope for a nlco pump kin pie. Ills henrt sank when ho learned tho pumpkins had fallen to pieces. The free pumpkins had been Xrost bitten. -IndlonaDOlls .News. EXPECT GERMANS TO ADOPT USE OF TANKS Ily W. 8. Forrest, (United Vmt Suit Corrwpondent) WITH THE FRENCH ARMIES IN THE FIELD, Jan. 18.
