(From Tuesday's Dally.) Nearly two hundred employes of tho Drooks-Scanlon Lumber Company walked out this morning as a protest against tho discharge of four fellow workmen, necessitating tho shut down of tho planer, tho shipping de partment, the box factory and part of tho saw mill. After leaving the plant tho men crossed tho river to Tho Shovlln-Hlxon Company plant where they wero Joined by about 25 employes of that company. Later in tho forenoon, through n commlttco appointed at a hastily called meeting at the Hippodrome, tho men offered to return to work if tho four discharged men were re employed, asserting that they had been discharged because of their con nection with a union organization meeting held yesterday. Replying, Manager Keycs denied having let the four men go becauso of their connec tion with the union movement. "We havo let them go," ho said, "becauso -wo consider them agitators and be causo they havo been trying to ere ato discontent among our men." Docs Nut Object to Union. In tho course of tho discussion, which took placo in Mr. Keycs' office, ho offered, as a compromise measure, to reinstate all of tho men except Kay Canterbury, whoso nttltudo toward tho company ho was especially dis satisfied with. Further, Mr. Keycs said that' he believed that he could provo that Canterbury was not what ho claimed himself to bo here. During tho discussion Mr. Keyes denied that Canterbury had been dis charged -because of his connection with yesterday's union organization meeting and stated that he would not attempt not interfere with the forma tion of a union. Klfcht-Hour Day Hobs Up. The question of union organization and recognition and the grant of tho eight-hour day kept bobbing up through the discussion, both Mr. Keyes and General Manager McCann, of Tho Shovlln-Hlxon Company, pointing out that it would be Impos sible for their companies to run their mills on eight hour shifts until all lumber mills in the country did tho eamo. Strikers to Stay Out. For tho strikers, Leader Canter bury, following tho Hippodrome meeting this morning, said, "This organization Is a peaceablo ono and mado no demonstration whatever, not oven shutting off tho machinery, although wo knew where tho levers were." In an adjourned meeting this at- tornoon at tho Hlppodromo, the strik ers voted Informally not to return to work until Canterbury should be re instated, or until charges against him could bo proved. Tho action was taken after tho report of the com mlttco which met with the mill man agers. It was stated by members of tho commlttco that this would mean that tho strike' would last through tho week.
