According to tho announcement:
Three cash prizes will bo awarded;
lio first of 2G, a second of $15 and
third of $10.
"Tho contest Is limited to students
n bleu schools and In tho two higher
grades of grammar schools.
"Tho conditions controlling tho
Contest ore as follows: Essays shall
hot exceed 3000 words In length;
$hall bo written in tho pupil's own
handwriting on one stde only of white
$apcr, and must be accompanied by
a certificate of the pupil's teacher to
tho effect that the essay Is tho un
aided work of tho pupil. Essays must
bo signed by tho writer with full
postoffice address Including name of
county, and mailed Mr. A. A. Llnds
ley at 400 Henry Building. Portland.
Oregon, and must be received not
later than April 1, 1D1S. Essays not
complying with those requirements
will bo rejected, and no essays will be
returned,

following points:
"1. Originality.
"2. Accuracy of statements.
"3. Manner of treatment.
M. Orthography, sytrtax and
punctuation.
"G, Neatness and legibility.
"Tho State Library has a special
collection of books on the American
Itevolutlon which have been provided
by tho Oregon Society of the Sons of
tho American Revolution and are
avallablo for any school In Oregon
frco of charge except for transporta
tion to and from Salem. The grade
libraries contain 20 volumes, and for
tho high schools there ore 33 vol
umes. They may be obtained by
writing to Miss Cornelia Marvin,
Stato Librarian, who takes an active
interest In patriotic education and
gladly will afford every possible facil
ity to ambitious students."

truck went to Iledmond today to

from the Central Oregon Irrigation
Company. The latter will be used
to smooth the cinder roads. Tomor
row the new bunkers being installed
on Pilot Butte will be completed and
the truck will begin long distance
hauls. The present bunkers were not
high enough to load the truck from.
