Mahaffey, of the Central Oregon Dank, just returned from Portland, where he attended the ban quet given at the Benson hotel for representatives of the Swift compan ies and banks in Oregon. Mr. Miv haffoy stated that a largo part of Mr. Dlanchard's work will be In Dcnd and vicinity, as one of the most Im portant shipping and feeding cen ters In the state. The securing of Mr. Ulanchard was announced at the Swift banquet, at which the principal speakers were C. C. Colt, K. W. Rumble, V. P. Dickey, and C. B. Swift. Mr. Colt empha sized the Importance of the packing industry in Portland, mentioning $12,000,000 as the total business transacted by the Swift plants during tho past year, while Mr. Rumble, of tho Columbia Basin Wool Warehouse Co., stated that there is now more wool In Portland than in any other city In the United States. The com pany has handled JS. 000,000 in loans during the year, he said. Mr. Dickey advocated the building up of herds and tho improving of stock conditions in the state, showing that In the last 12 months the Portland Cattle Loan Co. has aided ranchers to the extent of $9,000,000. Mr. Swift spoke on the importance of the Interior country and mentioned Bend as the logical center for ship pnlg and finishing stock. More than 150 were present at the banquet.
