InrKo Itancli Purclia Xcar llcnil for Wintering Animal Korccait Introduction of Moro l'- to-Date Method. (From' Wednesday's Daily.) Ilettar sheep, better and heavlor fleeces, and a smaller percentage of lose, are some of the chief results which are to come to pas in Central Oregon as tho outeome of the record prices being paid for wool. Tho in troduction of up-to-date methods, aud the abandonment, to a certain ex tent at least, of the old hit-or-miss range system, Is already being noted In the purchase of ranch properties in the vkinlfy of Detd. the aggregate value of which Is close to a quarter of a million dollars. A large proportion of thla land, totalling nearly 4080 acres, and pur chased within the last six weeks, ts to be used for sheep. A large part of the purchases have been made by Lake county sheepmen hitherto large ly dependant on the range, and th land taken over will be used for win ter feeding, for raising hay so that at no time will the sheep be wholly dependant on the range for their feed, while It will b possible to af ford adequate protection during the lambing season, reducing losses a" this time to a minimum. It is a tru ism among sheep growers that tha well-cared for. well fed sheep will produce more and bettor wool than tho range animal. In past years, the low value of wool made this hardP" worth considering, but with wool threatening to reach tha dollar marl before the close of the season, the sheep is no longer the lowly creature of other days, but has assumed a po sition of real importance. Itango Griming Less. Another cause actuating ranchers in the purchase of lands near Herd is the gradual dwindling of the rang as the result of the constant inroads made by homesteaders. With the na tional forest for summer grating, ami Irrigated lands supplying the fodder for winter consumption, the aheep man will consider himself fairly sat So far, land deals In the vinnltv have been made chiefly for the ben efit of aheop growers, but It Is pointed, out that those same ranches could be very advantageously used by cat tlemen In the Interior, not only for wintering, but as feeding stations where shrinkage eaueftd, by th Ions drives could be eliminated before shipping from Ilend. With sheep, the element of shrinkage la not cons.d ored Important. Not only will the quality of Central Oregon stock.
