and that Is ono of the chief reasoiiB
why tho wool Imported for uso In
America always brings a hlghor quo
tation than tho domustlo product."
A model of the Australian typo of
shenrlng shed, accommodating 10
shearers, was explained, Mr. Wilson
pointed out how tho sheep were first
sweated, softening tho grease, and
making shearing much easier, next
going Into pons, each of which com
municated with a Bhcaror, eliminat
ing tho usual scrambling for tho
animals, tho clipping of which would
bo most easy. Each shearor's pen, In

clown which tho shorn sheep would
bo slid into an individual tally pen,
making possible u checking up on

from tho ground, tho building would
permit of enough animals being shel
tered undorncath to provldo work
for an entire day, In caso of a storm.
A grader's room was provided In tho
model, and quarters for a mechanic,
to keep all tho machines In first class
cutting condition. Undor this sys
tem, black floccefl would bo careful
ly segregated from tho white, In or-
dor that the clip might be unimpaired
for tho manufacture of puro whlto
textiles. Immediately aftor grading,
tho wool could be baled, and thn bales
stenciled with tho nnmo of tho grow
er, tho weight of tho wool, and Its
quality.
Tni'inci-H May Adopt Plan.
Tho modol described would cost
approximately $10,000, Mr. Wilson
said, and an expenditure of this slzo,
ho advised, should not ho rondo whero
Icbb than 10,000 sheep would bo
sheared In a Reason. Tho bIzo and
cost of the shed could bo reduced,
but no less than n six-pen building
Bhould bo erected, If n grador, re
ceiving ordinarily $10 n clay, wero
to bo economically employed, ho
pointed out. Ho favored a sugges
tion inado by ono of his hoarers,
that In cbbo a smaller shed than this
woro put up, mo individual iicocch
bo tied up until enough had accum
ulated to keep a grador busy, as on
export would bo able to handle at
least 6000 fleeces a day. Ho warned
especially against using sisal twlno
to tlo up flccccB, declaring that fi
bers from tho cord frequently break
off In the wool, cannot bo separated,
and will not tnko tho muuo dyo as
tho fabric, bocauso of its vegetable
origin. Papor twlno, ho advised as
tho safest material for this purpose
The advantage of machine ovor
hand clippers, ho pointed out, lies in
tho fact that they can bo operated
l!fi per cent faster, and that their use
eliminates "second cutB."
That tho prices of wool arc based
on tho Mcoured product, and thence
shrinkage must bo carefully calcu
lated by tho buyer, wus a statement
which brought up tho question of
home scouring. Experience, ho said,
ban proved that this Is Impractical,
unless tho grower knows exactly for
what purpose his fleeces lll bu pur
chased, as under ordinary conditions,
tho mill sort must precce
lug.
During tho discussions which fol
tho Powell Ilutto section aro con
sidering tho erection of a co-opera-ttvo
shearing shed, and of gradually
Increasing tho number of their pas
turo slice). Mr. Wilson advised that
nu association ho formed to handlo
the matter, to take cara of such do
talis as the scquenco of bands of
sheep during shearing season.
"Abavo all things," ho said,
"chango from warchouso to ranch
grading. . Put although you aro
formed In nu association, don't pool
your wool, but? soil each clip sepa
rately, on a commission basis, It
you pool it, tho man with tho poor
clip will rccelvo more than his wool
Is worth, and tho man with tho, high
grade wool will got n lower figure
than ho is entitled to."
Evory point In tho lecture was
graphically Illustrated, for tho. car
was filled with samples of wool, both
domestic and Imported, In tho grease,
and scoured, In fleeces, In bales ac
cording to tho now system, and In
Ioobo bags, according to tho old.
Numerous charts epitomized tho main
points of tho lecture, and pictures
showing all phases of tho sheep and
wool Industry claimed much atten
tion,
