firms, and by what was considered

County Abstract company. Mr. How
man offored to handle tho work for
bovcii cents n folio, Including car
bon copies, with six rents n folio for
work dono without copies. Tho Crook
County Abstract Co., on ono kind of
work, submitted a hid of seven and
,35 cents, and on another variety, n
quotation of seven cents. These
bids Included carbon copies, without
which u reduction of oua and one
half cotilH per folio was offorod,
Tho afternoon was largely takon
up with discussion of tho bids sub

trans-mouutnln road now In uso to
n considerable extent. Tho present
road Is comparatively Impassable
nnd In view of tho fact that that
part of tho McKenzIo hlghwny, ly
ing within tho Cascade National For-
OBt, In Lano County, Oregon, Is be
ing constructed under a co-opcrntlvo
arrangement whoroby Fedornl funds
as well as County funds nro being
used, It Is uakod that Foderal nld
ho granted to Deschutes County In
Constructing Its portion of this Im
portant highway.
It Is understood that the survey
on the ground bus bcou mado by
your olllco, that approximately four
miles of now construction will bo
required and that it has been tenta
tively estimated that 110.000.00 will
bo required to complete tho work.
It Is proposed that tho County
of Deschutes co-operato with the
Federal (loverumuiit under Section
8 of thu "Federal Aid Itond Act," In
tho construction of this road, each
party of the cn-oporutlvo agreement
bearing 60 per cunt of tho cost of
plans, estimates and construction.
The execution of this project will
He with thu Department of Agricul
ture, and funds to defray the Couu
ty'H portion of tho oxpuuse will be
deposited In thu United States Treas

Surglcnl Hospital, nt 9:15 o'clock
last night, brought Dr. J. C. Vonde
vcrt, Chief of Pollco Nixon nnd Night
Officer Frank Kulp to tho Bcono, but
nothing could bo found ot tho man J
who Miss Hlodgett claimed had at
tempted to break Into tho placo,
Tho description sho gnvo Is that tho
man wns tall, woro n black slouch
hat and long overcoat, and tallies
with thnt given by Miss Duolah Den
nett, anothor nurso, nnd Joo Young,
a patient at tho hospital.
Tho two nurses wero in a bck
room In tho building when they saw
tho man rattling tho window, ap
parently trying to force his way In.
Young, still using crutches, neces
sitated by an injured foot, enmo to
their relief, but found that tho only
revolver In tho building was with
out sholls. After thoy had used tho
tolcphono, they saw tho man In front
of tho hospital, and this tlmo ho
menaced Miss Dlodgett nnd Young
with a rovolvcr. Tho nurses ran up
stairs and locked themselves In un
til help camo.
All three, who woro down stairs
at tho tlmo tho man first appeared.
