Forgotten There's n mlnhty IiIb pile of mer inhnndlso leaving tho Hcnd stores these, days; This-outgoing flood of merchan disers not confined to nny one es tablishment, nny two or three or hnlf dozen. The condition In gen oral, from the largest to the small est. Tho volumo of business this 3ro-hoHday season far surpasses nny other Hond or Central Oregon has vor seen. Shops uro busily engaged In tak ing .goods down from tholr shelves and putting them over tho counters to their customerH. One has only to spend n very few minutes In any one of the many pop ular mercantile establishments to appreciate the spirit of buying this year. Tor nnrao reason, presumably the Christmas spirit's predominat ing, the II. C. of I. him, for tho tlmb being, been forgotten. Hut to nee the ritmtlty of buying It might, on" thp'otlier hand, appear that shop pers, realizing tho growing cost of commodities, aro not only stocking up In useful articles for themselves, hut are thinking of their friends stud relatives In tho same light they think of themselves. "The buying of useful gifts this year far overshadows the buying of trinkets," said one merchant this morning. "Novelties seem to havo Xlvon plaro to more essential ac vensorles." Two little girls, their ages about 14 years, hurried up to the counter of one of the stores this morning. "Mother wants a new coat, 'cause I heard her" say so to father last night," said tho older of tho two, "and I heard father say, 'he'd see,' and so I came down here to tell you If ho comes In you tell him t don't want anything much, but sec that mother gots her coat." That was ono evidence of tho spirit of giving- manifested by n youthful shopper. "It's a hard matter to select any thing for Jim," one lady said speak ing to a fellow shopper. She, evi dently, was referring to her hus-H hand. "Von see he nover makes his wants known, and says I'd bet ter spend my Christmas allowauco on someone else. Hut I n I ways no tice thut he never overlooks any of tho wants of (ho family hlmsolf." "We're going to havo n bettor Christmas this year than wo havo had in a long time," said u plainly drcsoed lady, with whom wero threo little children, tho oldest no more than eleven years old. "John has been working steady for the last nine months at tho' mill, and we feel n little moro ablo to do something this Christmas." There Is a general strain among buyers this seeson which seems to manifest that peoplo uro moro ulilo to give than last year or many for mer years, anfl 'coupled with tho ability, thoro Is patent evidence of tho strong desire. children, of whom tho eldest, a daughter, Is now a studont In the University of Oregon at Eugene.
