GROWTH OF BEND COMMENTED

Under jlhe caption "Uend'aOVon
dcrful Growth" tho Crescent Nowa
hna the following to say concerning
tho growth of Hend:
"When Charley Dates, president
of tho Orecon State Press Associa
tion) was In Ilend soma weeks ago
and remarked that "There was more
Industry, more growth and building
Improvement going on In llcnd at tho
present time then in any city in tho
state, not to except Portland,' he
know what he was talking about.
"One, llko tho writer, who has not
visited tho town in a year would
scarcely recognize the place during
oven that Bhort lapse of time. You
can go to any section of llcnd resi
dence, business or industrial and
on every hand hundreds of buildings
nro in course of constructoln. And
the beauty of It la that every one
of them aro cither privately owned
by some snno homo builder or has
been rented long ago. On tho river
front tho great new Pilot Ilutto Inn
has been started, while further down
tho river tho big framework of an
addtlon to tho Bend Milling Company
plant looms up as prominently as
the mill proper. 'n tho heart of tho
business section tho flno now homo of
tho Central Oregon Dank is near
ly ready for occupancy. Tho walls
and roof of the huge, lire-proof busi
ness and ofHcc block of Hugh O'Kano
aro up, and tho same thing Is true
of many other new structures of
nearly as great Importance. Inquiry'
disclosed that It waH Imposslblo right
now to rent nny of tho old buildings;
that as soon na the new butdncsK
blocks nre ready for occupancy, other
llrms will bo dumping stocks of
goods into the back doora as fast
as the htuff Is being carried away
from tho front to their future quar
ter. Tho population of Hend has
nenrly doubled. In tho past fourteen
months, and Is now closo to 4,500.
"As thu News him stated before,
there Is a great lesson to bo derived
from Ilend's wonderful growth an
example or what new blood, coopera
tion and scrapping ability will do
for uny community."
