OPAL BIT PUT
E
LOCALS WIN SUNDAY
FIASCO 15-6
Myers 1'Mts Up Holler When Cup.
O'DonticIl Put Stover In tho Rox
in tho Ninth Inning With a lit
Run Lend Tctiicruw Fnlsliea
A travesty on America's greatest
of all outdoor sports was pulled off
Inst Sunday on tho local diamond
Then the hyphenated Opal City team
was sacked in a heart rending exhi
bition by a Bcoro of 1G to C by tho
Rend nlno. As one fan put It there
was a good bucking contest before
-which there wna a ball game. That's
just about as much as ought to bo
said about it.
Tho Rend lads, with a 13 run lead
at tho end of tho eighth Inning, ceas
ed taking Opal seriously. O'Donnell
-wasn't hop to the fact that thero was
a Uttlo sldo money up on the gamo
over on tho south end of tho bleach
era so ho shoved Stover into the box.
Just to give tho fanB a little fun. In
this story wo begin at tho end first,
lor thoro wbb little excitement beforo
Stover, with a million dollar grin,
nnd n grammar school peg, began
loping tho horsehldo across homo
plato. Thoro Is no Intention to hurt
Dutch's feelings, because the gentle
man with a Teutonic prefix, bo far
ng it generally known to tho public,
never sot his foot In tho box to pitch
an honest to goodness ball gamo bo-
fore. And what's more he doesn't
think ho can twirl. His placo is at
the mid sack. Well, Stover did not
get away good from tho start and
walked Carncs. He did bettor with
Raker, of Shovlln-Hlxon fame. Rut
then camo up Leo and Stover missed
tho man at first with a wild over
throw. Rorlng came, up and got a
nlco Blnglo, N. Wlcgand followed
suit and scored, nnd to mako mat
ters worso all three of the nforc-
nald visiting gcntlemon wore scored
on Stovor's wild pitch. Rut that
didn't worry tho Rend aggregation,
-for there was ono down and still a
margin of nine scores.
Myerx Gets XerroiiH,
Just at thla juncturo, however,
thero was one fan In tho crowd who
-lld begin to get uneasy on tho plno
board bleachers. This was Earl My
ers. Myors petulantly Jumped from his
.seat and with celority trotted over
to Cap. O'Donnoll and spoko in an
Imperious tono of voice:
'If you don't tnko that Dutchman
out now it will post you twenty four
dollars," spoko Myors.
Why?" quoth O'Donnell.
' I got twelvo dollars on this
game," Myers retorted, "and so far
It's won, but I feel It sllppln,' so ditch
the comedy."
Stover Get Jerked.
Forthwith, O'Donnoll, heeding tho
pecuniary call for help from tho king
lee fan gave Stovor his time and sent
lilm to third nnd beckoned for Toth
erow to perform tho doxology, which
he did 'muy pronto."
Again to return to the game.
Rend hit, ran, played horse on tho
Held and managed to kocp warm on
the chilly Sunday nfternoon. Thero
was not a great deal that could be
called base ball, and even tho scor
ers longed for the curtain to drop.
Kverybody on tho Rend toam hit at
least onco, and i almost everybody
scored.
Clow got 12 striko outs and was
touched for seven hlU. Rorlng, de
spite tho miserable support given
him by his team mates, got 10 strike
outs, but had less luck in holding
the Rond stickers from hitting. Tho
locals got 13 hits.
It 1b expected that Prlnevlllo wilt
mako It raoro interesting for the lo
cal fans noxt Sunday on the Rend
diamond.

REASON FOR BEGINNING AT
MATH TOT STRAH01
Town Able to Offer Ijirge Financial
Inducements nnd Lino Promises
Tonnage at Once.
That tho roa9on for beginning
work on tho O. C. & E. at Klamath
Falls, Instead of Rend, is because of
tho financial Inducements offered by
that city and tho prospect-of tonnage
from every miles of road ns construc
tion proceds, Is stated by Mr. Stra
horn In a letter recently received by
a member of the local railroad com
mittee. This does not mean, how
ever, that construction will not begin
here as soon "as possible, nor thnt It
will bo delayed beyond tho tlmo when
the right of way is provided hero.
Air. Strahorn's letter Is as follows:
"I hevo noticed some criticism of
our course in possibly beginning con
struction work on the llend-Klaraath
Falls line at Klamath Kails Instead
of at llcr.d. Of course you have fol
lowed this whole matter so closely
that you fully npprcclate the situa
tion, especially that 1 am not able
control this matter of which unit
shall be built first or entirely when
K shall be built, although I havo
from tho first Intended, to bogin at
Rend. It is purely a question of
financing. It happens that there are
several units or sections of our Cen
tral Oregon syotem upon which con
struction could be commenced almost
Immediately because money Is forth
coming to go a long ways toward
constructing it, which money could
not be obtained it it woro to bo ap
plied to tho building of somo other
section or tho entire system, it
happens that Klamath Falls In Its
groat anxiety for Immedlnto action
and by virtue of its greater ability
to contrlbuto than any other com
munity, undertakes to raise sutll
clcnt capital and othor kinds of as
sistance which when added to con
tributions of private Interests In that
sanib flold makes It entirely practic
able to go ahead thero. None of this,
howover, could bo obtained woro wo
to dofer construction until tho ontlro
system Is financed. It Is only avail-
ublo for Immediate use because of tho
anxiety of the subscribers to derive
im'niedlato benefits.
"Notwithstanding this there Is ab
Bolutoly no idea upon my part or
that of aay other communities vhero
v.'o tnlcht undor similar conditions
proceed with construction beforo we
do at Ilend, to stop vlth such con
struction or to censo efforts to secure
tho balcnco of tho capital needed to
carry on work simultaneously all
along the lino. Klamath Falls do-
stros this Just na much as I do be-
cnuso It wants tho connce'lon with
Rond at tho earliest posslblo moment.
It Is not at all unllkoly that wo might
yet be at work from Rond as quickly
or almost as quickly r.s from Klamath
Fells or any othor point. Ono thing
is certain. This could bo brought
about almost Immediately could Rend
afford as great assistance proportion
ately and mako as good a showing of
traffic to bi derived from tho first 40
or &0 miles of construction as can
bo shown on tho south end.
"Please do not forget that this Is
tho peoplo's road, and that whonovor
tho people como forward with tho
necessary help I will carry out my
pledges to the letter. Nothing would
suit me hotter than to bo able to pro
ceed with theso activities at Rend.
Meantime as I have already written
and wired, I am not unmindful of
tho splendid public spirit exhibited
by your people In tho securing of ter
minals and thq good progress being
made with tho right of way work.
A continuance of this aggressivo and
united action is tho best assurance
that Rend will como Into her own In
this great railway development."
Sincerely yours,
ROUT. B. STRAHORN."
