We have not Icon disappointed, yet

Just 21 hours actual running time.
It la n short day'a run from here to
Portland. So there you have It

from Oregon's metropolis to Crater

Riiifl to The Dnllex Direct.
There Is almost a direct north-
and-aouth road from the park to
Tho Dalles. Starting from Head
quarters, In the park, this route
drops 1C miles down the line Gov
ernment boulevard and Forest Re
servo road to the beginning of the
Demi road, nbotit two miles south of
old Fori Klamath. Wo did not need
Kasollne or oil, aa we had storked up
at Med ford with enough to take us
through to Ilend. Anhow. and with
no desire to adwrtlse tv car that
doesn't need It. let It be aald that
our Oakland Six Is as sting) with gas

Crater Lake, for SO to CO cents per

At I.a Pine and 2C cunts at Ilend.
Our route took us directly Into
the Dig Springs Indian reservation
This Is a line forest road, with one
ctlff 7ull of about four mllea In
Hand, Just after leaving the Fort
Klamath road. This Is far from bad,
however, and once getting to the top
Is clear stilling all the way through
to I.a Pino The road Is crooked,
winding through the cllow and dig
ger pines, but It Is hard und smooth
'and good for 2G miles an hour for

Just a short mllu frout the creek

with telephone nnd a (5o eminent

surrounding region as to Halting,
tilde trips and trails.
We had a number of copper-skin-neil
callers. These were Indians
from the surrounding rnnchua. In

them rode ponies, but some einuo In

Hood Nor til of Ilend Fine.
Just the same. Mend Is a good
town, and we left with no III feel
ings. We rolled on north over as
fine a highway as Oregon affords,
laid out In graceful curves along the
bank of the Deschutes. Oh. how-
charming that country Is! With the
r ver frothing and lolling In the can
yon below; cliffs and pinnacles of
painted rocks lifting Into the bluest
of blue skies; orchards of Juniper
trees covering the flats end benches:
green fields of alfalfa where an
abundance of Irrigating water gives
succulence and plenty; pretty bun
galow h with broad clover lawns and
picturesque fences of lava stone, and
on beyond, the towering, snow-capped
peaks of the Three Sisters, of
Mount Washington. I.ava Ilutte and
Jefferson,
All the way north we had frequent
and ncver-tlrlng glimpses of these
mountain peaks, with old Hood ad
ded to the list as we approached The
Dalles. Most of the way tho road
Is high, following the upper reaches
of thu table lands, acroos regions of
sage and Juniper, a land of color- or
rod rooks, yellow garni nnd n desert
painted In brightest shade of lav-
onder, purple and crimson. Tho
brightest touches. Just now, arc giv
en by ucrcs of "Indian paint brush
es," desert petunias and rock lilies,
It Is a picture that constcntly pleases
and swUtly changes.
A few miles below Ilend tho hlgh-
way crosses the river and leads a
distance out Into the Deschutes val
ley. It comes back to the east side
near Redmond, "the huh city of the
Deschutes."
Redmond has n live bunch of
boosters and Is determined to be
come a clt) of Importance. No doubt
It win, for It has splendid advan
tages, located as It Is directly on thu
railroad nnd In tho heart of tho Ir
rigated region.
Tho commercial organizations of
Redmond and Ilend, with the help of
tho many motorists of that prosper
ous region, hnvo done n good work
In marking thu main highway. Tho
"whlto nnd blue route," Indicated by
white nnd blue signs, leads tho trav
eler easily nnd unerringly, We fol
lowed this roulo on north, crossing
Crooked rlvor near Terrebonno, nnd
turning directly to the left nt tho
top of tho canyon grade Instead of
taking the old route. This led us
strnlght north to Metollus, Madras
nnd (latuwoy.
Tho roughest part of all tho route
Is through Hay Creek canyon, be
tween Gateway nnd Antelope. This
Is rocky und rough. Hut thero are
only a few in 1 1 on of It, and tho ning-
nllUent Hoenery more than coiupon
antes for tho slow going. A new
highway Is now under construction
which, when completed, will ohvlute
the rocky way through the canyon
bottom ThlH road will lead higher
up along tho cliffs.

And speaking of cliff roads, and
cliff grades, Hnotorn Oregon has a
number of those; yet few of them
are dangerous, for the reason that
the grmlBM nro easy, tho turns not
short, and thu way open mi (lint tho
drivers of nppronnhlng cars can see

From Slmnlko wo took tho roulo
