The Cultivation
of Alfalfa
Inci eased Yields May He Obtained by
Proper Cultural Methods,
(lly County Agriculturist.
A. 13. LOVETT.)
A large number of farmers nro at
this time interested In tho question of
cultivation of alfulfn. A largo num
ber nro convinced already that culti
vation Is a valuable operation for al
falfa, some In doubt as to Its ben
efits nnd a very few clnim that culti
vation Is detrimental to the crop.
This question has been satisfactorily
demonstrated not only on our experi
ment stations but also on farms in
Crook county. Thero Is no longer
any doubt but that the proper culti
vation of alfalfa Is bonellclnl. Some
fields havo been injured by cultiva
tion, bu not proper cultivation.
Alfalfa requires air as well as
water for maximum production. Air
Is necessary not only for tho crop
above ground but for tho roots grow
ing In tho soil. Cultivation loosens
tho surface soil and not only hastens
tho manufacture of plant food In tho
soil but also furnishes necessary air
to tho alfalfa routs. Tho cultivation
which might prove must beneficial
on ono soil may provo detrimental to
another, so that cultivation which Is
proper on ono soil Is not proper cul
tivation on another. For this reason
tbo best tool or Implement for culti
vating one field of nlfnlfa mny not
provo tbo best tool or Implement for
onothor field. In other words tho
proper cultivation of alfalfa calls for
moro than tho slmplo driving of a
team and machine over tho Held. It
Is necessary to got off tho mnchlno
nnd take n look at tho field whero
tbe work Is being dono to dctermlno
how much good Is being accomplish
od. Proper cultivation calls for tho
stirring of tho soil to a depth vary
ing from two Inches to four to flvo
Inches, depending upon tho soil nnd
tho condition of tho crop. A young
crop of nlfnlfa can not bo cultivated
ns Boverely or deeply ns enn an older
crop. All alfalfa Holds except pos-
Blbly the year old crop should bo

i cultivation of tho field after each
cutting of hay If properly dono will
provo beneficial.
At least throo tools or machines
may bo used for bcnoflclal cultivation
of olfnira In Crook county. Theso
nro tho spring tooth hnrrow, tho disk
hnrrow nnd tho nlfnlfa spuddcr, ono
of theso tools proving most beneficial
on ono soil nnd nnother on n differ
ent soli. Tho alfalfa spuddcr will
probably provo most bonollclnl on nil
soils If properly used. Tho common
disk harrow (not tho cutaway) mny
bo used to ndvnntngo on practlcnlly
all soils In Crook county If properly
used. This may also bo said of tho
spring tooth harrow nlways with tho
addition of tho phroso "If properly
used." Id using tiiny tool for culti
vation of nlfnlfa It Is necessary that
man get off tho mnchlno nnd tako n
look nt tho ground over which ho
has driven. Tho spring tooth hnrrow
mny bo tearing out more nlfnlfa than
wo renllzo without n careful study of
tho ground. Tho disk harrow may bo
turned nt too great an anglo and cut
out tmnny plnntB. If such Is found
true tho disk may still be used by
setting It nt n less anglo nnd putting
moro weight on tho mnchlno.
