Newspaper Man Writes of Crook
uounty Agriculturist In Conclaiung
Article on Prof. Hhnw's Trip.
In tho last of Addison Bennett's
articles on the recent trip of Profes
sor Thomas Shaw and other railroad
oflklals through tho Central Oregon
country, published In tho Oregonlan
on Sunday, appears the following ap
preciation of County Agriculturist
Lovott:
"In my former nrtlcle I mentioned
tho other membors of tho party,
Messrs. Graham, Arney, Hardy and
Freeman, representing the railroads,
and Professor Lovett, tho County Ag
riculturist or Crook County. Lot mo
say a few words more about tho lat
ter gontloman. Ho Is a young man,
but he has had qutto a good many
years' oxperlonce as an agricultural
toachor. This Is his first year In
Crook, but ho Is surely doing a grand
work. Ho has much to learn about
tho boII and cllmato of tho section,
much to learn about the soil and still
moro to loam about tho people, for
It Is a difficult matter for a stranger
to go Into a territory as largo as tho
Stats of Massachusetts (as Crook was
beforo Jefferson county was cut off)
and embrace all portions of tho coun
ty and got a good understanding of
tho peoplo of tho various communi
ties. This, however, must be done to
a degree beforo a teacher can suc
cood as ovory conscientious toachor
wishes to beforo much can bo ac
complished. "Hut Professor Lovott Is oho In a
thousand, and If his services wilt not
uo worm to tho peoplo of crook a
hundred tlmos his salary, then I am
no Judge. Novor did I soo a more
conscientious worker than Profossor
Lovott; never did I sea n man to
wnom mo people wnrmou up as mo
peoplo of Crook do to this young
teacher. He resides at Redmond.
