Many methods hnvo heen suggest-
ed and recommended for treating
I grain to prevent smut. Many of these
are good and somo nro of no vnluo
wlintsoaver. Tlio cheapest and us
ually most successful mothod Is thu
Formnllno treatment. Uso sixteen
ounces or ono pint of 40 per cent
Formalluo In forty callous of wator.
This Is nt tlio rato of ono ounce of
Formnllno to two nnd ono half gal
Ions of water. Stir thoroughly bo
foro using. There are two ways thnt
this solution may bo used on grnln.
It may bo sprinkled on a smooth
floor or a canvas sheet, thon the seed
placed on tlio floor or ohcet nnd
rprlnklod thoroughly. When tho sur
face Is moist, shovel tho grain over
as concrete Is mixed so that nil of
tho grain may bo moistened. Con-
tlnuo tho sprinkling and mixing until
this result Id obtained. Then cover
Up tho grain with sacks or blankets
and nllow It to stand for at least two
hours, nfter which tlmo uncovor and
spread out so that it may thoroughly
dry. Tho germination of tho grr.ln
may bo affected unless tho grnln In
well dried after treatment,
Tho dipping method -Is performed
by putting tho samo solution In n bar
rel and dtlpplng tho grr.ln In sacks
Into tho solution, allowing It to re
main ten minutes. Tnko It out nnd
drain well; then plnco tho grain or
sacks In n pllo and cover with snckB
or blnnkets In tho minin ninnnnr no
tho sprinkling mothod, allowing It to
stand two hours, after which It
should bo thoroughly dried. Ono
pint of 40 per cent Formnllno to 10
gnllons of water Is enough to tront
2500 pounds of grain. In smaller
amounts It usually takes about two
gallons of solution to every 100
pounds or grain.
Wo havo at present very llttlo
smutty grr.ln In this section of tho
country nnd It will pay tho farmers
woll to treat ovory bit of seed grnln
planted In order that tho disease mny
not bo stnrlpd nn our fnriiio. Aftni
smut has obtained n foothold In tho
ground, it is necessary to plant other
crops than grains In the fleld for cno
or two years In order that It may dlo
out for want of food. Tho Formaline
costs but little, nnd tho treatment
will pay in every coco. Sacks from
which tho grnln Is emptied before
treatment Rhoulil nlun bn Rnnkml In
tho solution boforo grnln Is again
placed in them, or seed may bo re
infected ovon boforo tho planting.
