Firstly, thoPortlanders met Bend's citizenship. They will agree with me. I bollove. whon I say that pri marily It is tho people of tho town that make that town, far moro than nil Its resources. And that being so. I'm qulto certain that Ilond need havo no fears for Its future nor In vestors roar for their ultlmato profit who havo been wlso enough to read the wrltlag on the wall and stake something upon Dend In the years noon to corno. Secondly, tho Portlandera saw something of Ilcnd and Central Orn- gon. I dare say many were surpris ed. Too many of us havo thought of Central Oregon as a land of utter dryness, with little In tho way jf wealth producers except wheat land. Thlsl Ittlo glimpse ot the interior dis proved many such false notions. In addition to grain lands In plenty tho excursionists saw and traveled through really vast areas of magnifi cent pioo forest3; they became al most Intimate with tho wonderful Deschutes river, than which there is no more remarkable power-producing stream In the Northwest: they In spected a nearly-completod Irrigation enterprise, built by the state, whote construction cost has been $450,000 and whose lands will embrace some 23,000 acres; and thoy caught glimp ses of fragments of other Irrigated segregations, where water already has replaced duit with vegetation. Then they found a town where 12 years ago there was a wilderness of sage brush: where, fndeod. there was nothing at all In the way of human habitation nearer then 35 miles. And they were told that four years ago the nearest railroad was 100 miles distant. At that place there stands economically developed. But most immediate Is tho timber. Vliore the railroad and the river and the timber meet is Hend. Topo graphically Its position as a lumber manufacturing point Is Ideal. Prob ably not lees than twenty billion feet of pine must bo milled there, because It would be economic folly to try to upset gravity and mill it olsewhero an expensive exporlmont! And probably much moro than that win bo manufactured at Dend, for where manufacturing once starts, and lalxir aw wa x W- wr OILJEJTER U 3 Mother and children need it for vbv fl V the bath father for his morn- frvf '1 ins shave. c3x Dealers everywhere) Sj&y C3 lt'rh. tor .;(, "WarmA SRA Q U CM Cor.,.."
