WEDNBSDAY, OCTOBBK IS. 181 1. DESCHUTES COVXTY. 76 X FOR NBW COUNTY JKFFKKSO.V a)lXTY. ' 78 X.FOIt XBW COUNTY A PAIK FIGHT. "It Is better to have lorcd and lost than never to have loved nt all," It an old saying with merit . Equally true, It is almost better to lose a fair fight than to win unfarely. Wc do not bollcxe that wo shall -' lose the county division fight. On the contrary, wo are convinced that ' -we shall win It, although probably by a narrow margin, and Indications and reports from all precincts Sub stantiate that opinion. We are optimistic firstly because we believe that every resident of tho proposed Deschutes county is selfish, Justtiaa" WO arc. Being selfish, each wiujdo what will benefit him or her roost. "And after sano study of the facts, rio one can help feeling that all portions of Deschutes .county will he benefitted by division. That. Is one reason for optimism. It is baie'd upon a sincere belief In the merits of the case, and confidence In tho good Judgment of the voters with whom decision rests. Tho other prime reason is that the fight, for division has been conducted along fair, clean lines. Nothing has been said, and nothing has been printed, of which any of the pro-divl- siqnists should bo ashamed. What ever tho outcome, there need be to apologies and no explanations after November third. The figures tabulated by tho divi sion workers are absolutely accurate, and their arguments are. founded on facts. That is why opponents of di vision havo been unable to contradict them, and Instead Have resorted to personalities and attacks actuated by community Jealousy or motives of personal gain. No logioal reasons have been pro. duced against division. Anyone who will study the question dispassion ately can see that division means economy and direct benefit to tho west side of the present Crook couu- ty. Votes should be cast solely with an eye to the benefit to the voter, and uninfluenced by the poison of Illog ical hostility. We regret tho opposition, of course. It la regrettable and yet it Is laughable! Redmond, four years ago a champion of division, now strug gling against It because the time is "too early!" Redmond men cam paigning against division, and in the next breath admitting that they would favor It could Redmond get the county seat! Redmond attempt ing a trade with Madras, offering ts votes to Jefferson county if Jeffer son would knife us, and then going out In Deschutes county and arguing against division! Whatever the outcome, that'spcclfs of opposition must prove disastrous to those who stoop to It. And sure ly. If we continue to stick to facts and to creditable methods, we can face our friends and our opponents with a clean record, prepared either to take , up the administration of Deschutes county In a fair way, true to our pledges, or to battle further for the establishment of a west side county later on. ( N&v V R. 11 SMITH CLOTHING COMPANY LEARN THE WAY FIOURES TELL TRUTH (Madras I'lonoor.) It Is a fact that tbore has not heon produced as yet any sound log ical and plausible arguments against division, either by any of the tax payers opposing it, or those who have beon attending the meetings from PrinevJHe. There haa never boon nny printed matter produced vith figures against division, and what figures that havo been quoted hnve been orally, and many of them have been changed to fit the occasion. While the peoplo who havo been in favor of the move ment have statistics and estimates, that have not boen successfully dis puted. Tbeeo figures certainly havo stood the test of several meetings, without. being found in error.
