With the coming of tho spring weather work on tho Tumnlo project hn opened up and Is now In full swing. At present three camps nro running, according to Chief Clerk Ross, who was In town Saturday af ternoon, and ono of them, Camp 6, will bo n regular town with a btggor population than has Laldlaw Itself. Thl3 Is tho camp at tho dam slto whero HO men aro employed now. There will be a number of men with families there. For tho accomoda tion of tho others n dining room has Just been completed to hold 175. At this point at the present tlmo tho work consists oi stripping away the soil and tearing away tho rock for the core wall of tho dam. Six wheel scrapers and a screening out fit have recently been bought from tho C. O. I. Co. for uso hero and on Friday Mr. Laurgaard went to Port land to select and purchase addition al outfits for tho work. Ho was ac companied by Axel Rye who recently returned to tho work after spending the winter In Norway. Another big camp will bo No. i which has Just been started up. At present 25 mon are employed from this camp which Is tho first to begin work on tho distributing system. It is located on tho A. F. Will property 6 miles north of Laldlaw. Camp 4 with about 10 men started last Saturday. They are finishing a small cut la tho canal on which Adams had a contract last year, and haTlng a much easier time at It. be cause the rslns have so softened the formation that It Is possible to re move tho rock, or hardpsn, with eorapors. Last summer at thlspolnt it 'was necessary to use powder to loosen the rock. .... The steel flumo has been laid In TcwVsbury canyon and Is In process of orcutlon on tho other portions of tho canal. In a week or two moro thlrt portion of the work will be fin ished and only tho dam and tho distributing system will remain. MORE LANDS OPENED BY GOVERNMENT UNDER THE 320-AGRE HOMESTEAD ACT Official notice has been received In Bend ot tho opening of a large list of additional land under tho enlarged homestead act (320 acres.) All this land Is In The Dalles district. It should not bo confused In any way with the proposed elimination of lands in tho Deschutes and Paulina forests, as ono can tee by reference to a map that none of It I In either of these forests. Most of the tracts arc In the northern part of Central Oregon, with a few lying In the eas tern port of Crook county. Tho areas became enterable In 320 acre claims on March 9.
